Torrere: Cooking and Baking

Torrere is a cooking assistant you talk to, and the thing you are talking about is a real recipe — not a chat log you have to scroll back through with wet hands. Ask for half the butter and the line changes. Ask to make the sauce in the pan the chicken came out of and a step appears. The conversation is a way of editing a document, and the document is what you cook from. CHANGES YOU CAN SEE Every edit comes back as a short list of what went in and what came out. Nothing is quietly rewritten inside a paragraph of chat. If an amount changed, you see the old one and the new one. ONE TAP BACK Undo restores what a change replaced, rather than merely deleting what it added. Halve the butter, undo, and the original amount is there again. Every recipe keeps its versions. AMOUNTS THAT ADD UP Ask for lemon juice twice and the line you already have is updated instead of a second one appearing. Quantities are held as exact fractions and rounded only when they are shown to you, so a doubled recipe does not drift. WORK THAT STARTS YESTERDAY A recipe that needs a fed starter, soaked beans, brined meat or chilled pastry says so at the front, with the waiting time, before you have started. The app adds up the stated times and tells you roughly how long the whole thing runs from here — most of it waiting — rather than letting you find out four hours in. COOK MODE One instruction at a time, in type you can read from the other side of the counter. Timers are set from the step that mentions them and keep the right time when the phone is put down. Tap targets sized for a knuckle, not a fingertip. Ask a question mid-step without losing your place. BRING A RECIPE IN Paste a link and the recipe is read off the page. If a site will not answer our servers, the app opens the page itself, on your phone, and reads it there. Paste the text of a recipe and it comes in as one. With Chef, point the camera at a cookbook page or a handwritten card and the recipe is read off the photo. SEND ONE OUT Share a recipe as a link that anyone can open, with no account and no app. It is a copy of the recipe as it stood when you shared it, so your later changes stay yours. Take the link down whenever you like. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO YET It is early, and you should know before you pay rather than after. There is no voice control, which in a kitchen is the obvious thing to want. It is on the way and it is not here now. And one that will not change: the assistant writes its answers with an AI model, and models get things wrong — quantities, timings, temperatures, whether something is done. Torrere shows you what it changed so you can catch it. In the kitchen, trust your own eyes and nose over anything on a screen. CHEF Chef is the subscription. It removes the cap on how much you can use the assistant, and it reads recipes off photos. $12.99 a month or $99.99 a year, starting with a week free.
