Lacerta

A phone, the night sky, and a simple device. That's all you need to determine your location using algorithms more than two hundred years old — and which still work today. GPS lives in every pocket — but what happens without it? Geomagnetic storms, jamming, service outages, no signal in remote locations — in any of these situations, the stars remain a reliable reference. They were 200 years ago, and they still are today. Lacerta is a research project with one specific question: how accurately can you determine your location from the stars using only a phone and the simplest improvised tools. The app uses three methods: - The well-known method: determining the position from the altitude of two stars, including position determination using a virtual star at the zenith. - The uncommon method: determining the position from the intersection of star lines with a plumb line. - The sirnature method: determining the position from the movement of satellites relative to the stars.
