Roots 97.1 FM Abeokuta

We’re your friendly neighborhood indigenous radio station, cranking out 60% reggae vibes and 40% of everything else that makes you groove! Reggae, the infectious Jamaican sound that burst onto the scene in the 60s, later danced its way into the heart of Nigeria, thanks to legends like Sunny Okosuns, Terra Kota, and Ras Kimono, just to name a few. By the 80s, reggae was rocking the Nigerian music scene like nobody’s business, and it just kept getting better! Fast forward to today, and a whole new generation of Nigerian reggae artists is blending reggae with hip hop, R&B, and dancehall, creating a sonic explosion! Think Timaya, P Square, Burna Boy, and more—these artists are taking the world by storm! And guess what? On November 29, 2018, UNESCO officially crowned reggae as an “intangible cultural heritage” of humanity, giving it a shiny badge of honor for preservation and promotion. If there’s a place that needs the uplifting and powerful messages of reggae, it’s definitely Nigeria! Let the rhythm roll!
