Full description
Learn Japanese the way a first-year course teaches it: hiragana, katakana, and the 314 kanji and 1,557 words of JLPT N5 and N4. Every N5 kanji is free forever — one payment adds N4, with no subscription, no ads, and everything works offline. 生 is read セイ in 学生, い in 生きる and う in 生まれる. A kanji is not one fact, so Kanji Trail does not treat it as one flashcard. It teaches the meaning, the readings and the writing of each character separately, and reviews each on its own schedule. WHAT YOU GET • 314 kanji for JLPT N5 and N4, in the order a first-year course teaches them • 1,557 words built from those kanji, with audio for every reading • 1,100 real Japanese sentences with furigana, which open up as you learn • Hiragana and katakana charts, with stroke order for every kana • Stroke-by-stroke writing practice on genkouyoushi squares • Printable practice sheets you can take to class on paper • Every JLPT N5 kanji free forever — one payment adds N4, no subscription EVERY READING, IN THE WORDS THAT USE IT Each kanji has a readings map: each reading with the words that actually use it. The reading quiz turns that around — it shows you a word and asks which reading its kanji takes there. That is the part of kanji a word list can't teach. WRITE IT, DON'T JUST RECOGNISE IT Writing practice checks you stroke by stroke on the squared paper Japanese students use. Trace first, then write over a faint guide, then from memory. Animated stroke order for all 314 kanji and every hiragana and katakana, and any set of characters can be printed as a practice sheet. READ REAL JAPANESE The reader holds 1,100 sentences from the Tatoeba project, each with checked furigana and its English one tap away. A sentence opens once you know every kanji in it, so what you can read grows with what you have studied — and the reader tells you which kanji would open the most new sentences next. TAP A PART, SEE ITS FAMILY Every kanji is broken into its parts. Tap 木 in 休 to meet 本, 林, 森 and every other kanji drawn with it, with how well you know each one. DON'T MIX THESE UP 日 or 目? 休 or 体? The look-alike drill puts easily confused kanji side by side in real words, and it is built from the look-alikes you actually get wrong. LEARN THE WAY YOUR CLASS DOES Paste a page of Japanese and My Class picks out its kanji as a list you can study, print as a practice sheet, or share with classmates as a link or QR code. Works alongside any first-year course, including Genki. Not affiliated with or endorsed by any publisher. ALSO IN THE APP • An original mnemonic for each of the 314 kanji, which you can rewrite in your own words • Kanji-only mode, which hides the English until you tap • On'yomi and kun'yomi spoken by an on-device Japanese voice • Hanko seals for milestones, share cards, a daily goal, a streak and a reminder • Everything works offline. No account, no ads, no tracking, no data leaves your phone. FREE AND PAID All 79 JLPT N5 kanji are free forever, with every word and sentence built from them, in every study mode — a whole level, finished, before there is anything to decide. Three class lists of up to 40 kanji are free too. A single purchase adds JLPT N4: all 314 kanji, 1,557 words and 1,100 sentences, for as long as you own the app. There is no subscription. Kanji and word data are from KANJIDIC2 and JMdict (EDRDG), stroke order from KanjiVG, and the sentences from Tatoeba (CC BY 2.0 FR), credited under each sentence in the app.

What's new

More is free. Every JLPT N5 kanji - all 79 - is now free forever, with every word and sentence built from them, in every study mode. The free tier used to stop at 60, three quarters of the way through N5. Class lists are freer too: three lists of up to 40 kanji, instead of one list of 15. A single payment still adds JLPT N4 and the rest of the set. No subscription.
