Wind Ride: Wind Cycling Routes

Plan a wind cycling route that works with the weather instead of against it. On a flat, open ride the wind is the hill. WindRide plans road cycling routes around the wind forecast. Tell it how far you want to ride and when you are setting off, and it works out which way to send you first — so the tailwind lands where you actually want it, and the headwind is behind you while your legs are still fresh. WHAT IT DOES • Round trips and one-way routes, planned on the forecast for the hour you leave • Three wind-optimised alternatives side by side, so you can see the trade-off • Drag any route to reshape it — the points you drop become waypoints • Live wind animation over the map for the hour you picked • Road-works warnings along the route, where they have been reported • GPX export for Garmin, Komoot, Wahoo and anything else that reads GPX • Import a GPX you planned elsewhere and see how it scores against the wind • Every ride you save is kept, so you can find that good one again weeks later WHERE THE HARD PART GOES Most planners treat wind as weather to read afterwards. This one plans with it. You choose the shape of the effort: • Headwind first — grind out, sail home. The classic. • Tailwind first — for when you are meeting someone at the far end. • Balanced — crosswinds where it can, no long stretch of either. Every wind cycling route comes back with a wind score: the average wind at your back across the whole ride, in km/h. A positive number is a route that is working for you. It is the number to compare two options on. BEFORE YOU INSTALL: COVERAGE WindRide can only plan rides inside the area it has road and wind data for. That area is a box on the map, and its edges do not follow national borders — some countries are inside it entirely, some only in part. The app will say so plainly rather than hand you a route it cannot stand behind. The area grows a region at a time, as one person paying for one server can manage it. WHAT IT COSTS Nothing. There is no paid tier, no advertising, and nothing is sold on. The server and the forecasts cost real money every month, so there is an optional tip jar inside the app — the app is identical either way. AFTER THE RIDE Every route you save is listed with its distance, time and wind score, and the GPX can be rebuilt from any of them later. There is also a ride card: the route, the numbers and the wind drawn as a single image, for sending to whoever you ride with. HOW IT WORKS Roads come from OpenStreetMap. Routing runs on a self-hosted BRouter. Wind and weather come from Open-Meteo. This app is the WindRide website in an app window, so it stays in step with the site and needs a data connection to plan a route. ONE THING SAID PLAINLY A generated route is a suggestion. It will warn you about road works that have been reported, but not about the ones nobody reported, and never about the ice or the lorry. You are the one riding it, so you judge the conditions on the day. WindRide is a personal, non-commercial project run by one person in their spare time.
