AKIS Portugal

AKIS Portugal is the National Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System dedicated to strengthening collaboration and innovation across the agricultural and forestry sectors. By bringing together farmers, researchers, advisors, educational institutions, businesses, public authorities, and rural communities, AKIS Portugal promotes the modernization and sustainable development of rural areas through knowledge sharing, innovation, digital transformation, and the adoption of emerging technologies such as Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI). The initiative serves as a collaborative framework designed to connect stakeholders and facilitate the exchange of expertise, best practices, and technological solutions that support the evolution of agriculture and forestry in Portugal. Through this integrated approach, AKIS Portugal contributes to improving productivity, sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience within rural economies while addressing key challenges such as climate change, food security, biodiversity preservation, and environmental protection. Innovation and digitalization are central pillars of AKIS Portugal’s mission. The system actively encourages the adoption of advanced digital tools and intelligent technologies, including precision agriculture, smart farming systems, data analytics, automation, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence solutions. In particular, the introduction of Generative AI opens new opportunities for rural innovation by enabling faster knowledge creation, intelligent decision support, automated content generation, personalized advisory services, predictive analysis, and more efficient communication between stakeholders across the agricultural ecosystem. Generative AI can support farmers, advisors, researchers, and policymakers by simplifying access to information, generating tailored recommendations, improving training and education materials, and enhancing the dissemination of agricultural knowledge. By integrating AI-driven technologies into agricultural practices and rural development strategies, AKIS Portugal aims to foster smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable farming systems that are accessible to both large-scale enterprises and small rural communities. AKIS Portugal also plays a key role in promoting collaboration between science, technology, and practical agricultural applications. Through research partnerships, innovation networks, training programs, and advisory services, the system accelerates the transfer of knowledge from academic and research institutions to the field. This ensures that technological innovation, including AI-powered solutions, can be effectively applied to real-world agricultural and forestry challenges. In addition to technological advancement, AKIS Portugal promotes lifelong learning, capacity building, and digital inclusion within rural communities. By supporting education, professional development, and collaborative knowledge-sharing networks, the initiative helps create a culture of continuous innovation and adaptation. It encourages stronger connections between academia, industry, policymakers, and local stakeholders to ensure that innovation remains practical, inclusive, and beneficial for all participants in the agricultural value chain. AKIS Portugal is committed to building a more connected, innovative, resilient, and sustainable future for agriculture and rural development. Through collaboration, knowledge transfer, digital transformation, and the responsible adoption of Generative AI technologies, the system contributes to the modernization of rural territories while strengthening the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of the agricultural and forestry sectors in Portugal.
