Full description
I open ScentLayer when I want to turn a scent over in my head. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to buy. The whole thing runs on the phone and stays there. I usually start in Create Blend. Three layers, the way a perfume is actually written: top, heart and base. Each layer takes one or two note families, and I set the strength to Soft, Balanced or Strong. Then I hit Analyze Blend and read the profile: Fresh, Floral, Warm, Woody, Sweet and Deep, plus a line on how well it sits together and an overall score. It is a sketch. I can see straight away which way the mix is leaning. When I have a mood and no notes yet, I go to Mood Matcher. The choices are Elegant, Energetic, Calm, Romantic, Mysterious, Clean, Bold and Cozy. I pick one, get a direction, and a starter blend lands in the composer so I can pull it apart. Scent Lab is for when I want to set the balance by hand. I spread 100 points across the six characters with sliders and see what came out on top and what came second. Compare is for the days when two ideas are almost the same and I cannot choose. I build blend A and blend B, put the profiles next to each other and read a short conclusion. Challenges use the same rules as small tasks. Raise the freshness, keep sweetness low on a woody base, or hold every value inside an even range. I submit a blend and see which conditions landed and which ones missed. Note Explorer holds twelve families: citrus, fruity, green, aquatic, aromatic, floral, spicy, gourmand, vanilla, amber, woody and musk. Each one says where it usually sits in the pyramid, what it pairs with and what mood it tends to give. From there I can send a family straight into the composer. In the Guide I reread how layers, strength and compatibility work. When I want to check whether any of it stuck, there is a short quiz in the same place. ScentLayer does not name bottles from a shop, and it does not promise that a diagram on the screen will smell the same from a bottle. I use it to build a structure, notice how citrus lifts wood, and see where the sweetness has already gone too far.
