Full description
CameraBench measures what your phone's camera hardware and video encoders can actually do — by recording with them, not by reading a spec sheet. WHAT IT MEASURES • Every lens the system exposes — main, ultrawide, telephoto, front — with focal length and physical sensor size. • The real maximum recording resolution for each lens and codec (AV1, HEVC, AVC), found by walking the advertised sizes downward and recording each one, stopping at the largest one that works. • Each encoder's measured macroblock ceiling, which is what actually limits resolution — not the headline bitrate. • Color bit depth, and whether 10-bit truly reaches the file or the platform quietly caps it at 8-bit. • Camera start-up time and raw storage write speed. WHY IT EXISTS Phone camera specifications describe encoders, not results. A device can advertise a 240 Mbps HEVC encoder that refuses anything above 512x512, or a 10-bit profile with no HDR capture path behind it, so the recording lands 8-bit anyway. What a manufacturer advertises in marketing might not exactly match what the phone does in reality. CameraBench finds out by recording and measuring directly. THERMAL THROTTLING TEST (optional) The advanced test records continuously for up to 10 minutes per codec at the resolution that device verified, then charts frame rate, encoded bitrate and battery temperature across the whole run — so you can see whether a phone holds its frame rate or starts shedding frames as it warms up. This test deliberately works the phone hard. It will make the device warm, it drives the encoder continuously, and it takes around ten minutes per codec. So it only runs while the phone is plugged in and above 25% battery; it stops by itself if the battery falls to 10% or the system reports critical thermal status. Nothing is saved — the video is encoded and measured in memory, then discarded. PUBLISH AND COMPARE (optional) You can publish a report so numbers can be compared across phones. A report holds hardware measurements only: model, chipset, Android version, camera and codec capabilities, storage speed, and the thermal run. No photos, no video, no audio, no location, no contacts, no account — nothing in it identifies you. The app shows you exactly what will be sent before anything leaves the phone, and a published report can be deleted from inside the app at any time. Privacy policy: https://vilimpoc.org/indie/CameraBench/legal NO ADS, NO TRACKING No advertising, no analytics, no third-party SDKs, no account, no login. Two permissions: Camera, to measure the cameras, and Internet, used only when you choose to publish a report. If you use Android's built-in backup, the app's saved settings are included — among them the token that identifies the report it uploaded — so a restored or replaced phone can still open and delete the report this install published. REQUIREMENTS Android 5.0 or newer. Results are most detailed on devices whose camera HAL reports FULL or LEVEL_3.
