Full description
9,096. The number of stars on your device, taken from the fifth edition of the Yale Bright Star Catalogue. The brightest is Sirius at magnitude −1.46; the faintest is 7.96. There are 5,080 brighter than magnitude 6.0, which is roughly the naked-eye limit. 336. Stars carrying a proper name. Vega, Altair, Deneb, Antares. 88 and 487. Constellations, and the line segments that join them. 110. Deep-sky objects included — the Messier catalogue, M1 through M110, complete. To be straight about it: there are no independent NGC or IC objects in here. 9. Solar system bodies whose positions are computed: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Pluto is not among them. Planets use VSOP87 and the Moon uses ELP-2000/82, with nutation applied. 3. Kinds of twilight — civil, nautical and astronomical — because the hour you wait for depends on whether you are photographing or setting up a telescope. 0. Network permissions. This app does not declare INTERNET. It asks only for location, and if you decline it computes for a default position and says on screen that it has done so. Every catalogue is bundled, so it behaves identically on a mountain with no signal. 0. Things you can buy inside it. There is no paid tier. There are no ads. Four screens. Sky draws the chart and lists the eight most notable objects currently above the horizon. Today gives sunrise, transit and sunset with bearings, moonrise and moonset, the moon's age and illuminated fraction, and the three twilight times. Catalog lists the 9 planets with distances, 156 named stars brighter than magnitude 3.0, and the Messier objects. A slider sets the limiting magnitude anywhere from 1 to 8. What to know so it does not disappoint. There is no hold-up-to-the-sky mode that follows the device's orientation — the app does not read the motion sensors. The chart cannot be pinched to zoom, tapped to select an object, or scrubbed forward in time. Settings are not persisted, so closing the app returns the limiting magnitude and the toggles to their defaults. There is no observing log and no favourites. It shows what is in the sky right now, quietly, without touching the network. Use it as that and nothing more. English and Japanese.
