Stolo is a free, encrypted messenger that keeps working off the grid. Text, files, voice messages, live GPS position and an emergency SOS travel over a self-configuring mesh of Wi-Fi, cellular and TCP links. No account. No phone number. No servers in the middle. HOW IT WORKS Nearby phones running Stolo discover each other over Wi-Fi and form a mesh on their own. Add a gateway or an RNode radio and the mesh reaches further. A single message can cross several links on its way to its destination, and the mesh picks the route for you. PERMISSIONS Stolo asks for location only to share your position with people you choose, for the microphone only to record voice messages, and for notifications so you hear about incoming messages. Mesh networking runs as a foreground service so the phone stays reachable while the app is in the background; you can switch that off any time.
