Full description
Most apps already show up in your language, and social and chat apps often have a translate button built in. Glasslate is for the moments those don't cover: a local app from another country that was never translated, text inside an image, a comic or a game screen, a line the app's own translation skipped. Instead of taking a screenshot and pasting it into a translator, leave Glasslate on and the translation appears right where the original text sits, in any app. Translation runs entirely on your phone, so it is not as polished as an online translator. It is made for the times when getting the gist is enough. WHEN IT HELPS • Local apps from another country with no translation • Text inside images, posters, comics and game screens • The parts an app's own translation misses • Anything you would otherwise screenshot and paste into a translator WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT • It never asks what language you are looking at. Other translators make you choose "from" and "to". Glasslate works out the source itself, per block of text, and works it out again when the screen changes. You only choose the language you want to read. • Your screen content never leaves your device. Recognition and translation run on-device. Captures, recognised text and translations live in memory only — never stored, never uploaded. No account, no sign-in. HOW IT WORKS 1. Pick the language you want to read. 2. Choose Whole screen or Selected area. 3. Tap Start and allow screen sharing. 4. Use your phone normally. Translations appear as you go. Glasslate reads the screen once it stops moving, and your taps still reach the app underneath. Switch to Tap the bubble to translate only when you tap the floating control. LANGUAGES Recognises Latin, Chinese, Japanese and Korean scripts. Translates into every language supported by on-device ML Kit translation. Each translation model downloads once (Wi-Fi only by default) and then works offline. The Chinese, Japanese and Korean recognition modules are installed by Google Play services under its own network policy. WHAT IS FREE AND WHAT IS PAID Everything that decides quality is free: text recognition, every target language, and whole-screen translation. Glasslate Premium is a one-time purchase that adds convenience, not accuracy. Premium adds automatic translation (it follows the screen, no tapping) and Selected area (one part of the screen). One purchase, no subscription, no account. Every new install starts with a 7-day trial. SCREENS THAT WILL NOT BE TRANSLATED Banking, payment and DRM video screens block capture, and some apps hide overlays. Glasslate does not circumvent either; it tells you translation is unavailable there. This is intended. WHAT TO EXPECT Translation is done on-device. Sentences can come out stiff or wrong in places: good for getting the gist, not for relying on word for word. On Android 12 and later, translations are drawn in a layer that stays below the system's opacity limit for pass-through touches, so the original text remains faintly visible behind them; the translation is set in bold so it stands out. That is the trade-off for letting you keep tapping the app underneath. Recognition quality depends on the text on screen. Small, stylised or low-contrast text may be missed. PERMISSIONS • Display over other apps — to draw translations. • Notifications — running state and a stop control. Optional. • Screen sharing — confirmed by Android each time you start; the entire screen, so it works across apps. PRIVACY Glasslate never uploads screen content. The network is used only to download language models and recognition modules, and for ML Kit's own diagnostics (detected and chosen languages, not content). The privacy policy is linked in the app.
