Full description
Anansi's Library is a reading app for children aged 5 and up. Twenty-six storybooks are built into the app, so a child can open it and start reading straight away, with no account, no subscription and no internet connection. WHAT A CHILD CAN DO • Read twenty-eight storybooks, from six-page stories to thirty-page ones • Have sixteen of them read aloud, with each sentence lit as it is spoken • Look back over the words a story stopped on, with what each one means and the line it came from • Choose a book by subject — animals, adventure, fantasy, funny stories, science and nature, life — or by how long it takes to read • Follow a choose-your-path story where their decisions lead to different endings • Answer optional comprehension questions after a book and see how they scored • Pick up exactly where they stopped, in every book, without finding their place again READING LEVELS Books are graded from Level 1 (Early Reader) upward. Level 1 is a couple of sentences beside a full-width picture; Level 5 carries a full paragraph. Above that the levels ask for a different kind of thinking rather than more words, up to Level 8, where a reader weighs accounts that disagree. Stories run from three minutes to twenty-one, so there is something to fit the time available. READING ALOUD Sixteen books have a voice. Tap Listen and the story reads itself, one sentence lit at a time, so a child can follow the words while they hear them. The voice is AI-generated, and it is said so in each book's information. Narration is a separate download, chosen one book at a time with its size on the button, so nothing lands on your data unless you ask for it. WORD LISTS Every book ends with the words it stopped on: what each one means, written for a child at that reading level, and the line it came from. 152 words across the library. Nothing is scored and nothing is asked — it is a list to look at, and it can be opened again from the book's page at any time. FOR PARENTS The first time the app opens it asks two questions: whether to lock the parent area with a four-digit PIN, and roughly how old the reader is, so books written for older children stay out of the way. Both can be changed later, and neither is ever shown back to the child. The parent area holds: • Reading activity — which books have been finished, which are in progress, and how far • Quiz results for each book • Reading level controls, to choose which levels appear in the library • Category controls, to choose which subjects appear • Downloaded books, and a check for newly published ones • Notifications when a book is added, off until you switch them on • Whether the page turns by itself while a book is reading aloud, counting down first and stopping if the page is touched WORKS OFFLINE Twenty-six books ship inside the app, so a device that never connects to the internet is fully usable — on a plane, in a car, or on a tablet with no SIM. New books, corrections and narration can be downloaded when you are online. PRIVACY No advertising. No account or sign-up. No analytics or usage tracking. No social features, messaging or user-generated content. No purchases of any kind. Reading progress is stored on the device and nowhere else. Anansi's Library is designed for children aged 5 and up.

What's new

The first public release of Anansi's Library: free storybooks for children in Guyana, aged 5 and up. 26 books are built in and work with no internet, and 10 more download from the library. Books are graded by reading level, and 19 read aloud with each sentence lit as it is spoken. Each book ends with its harder words and an optional quiz. A parent area, locked with a PIN if you choose, sets which levels and shelves appear. No ads, no purchases, no accounts.
