Place a disc so that a line of your rival's pieces is trapped between two of yours, and the whole line turns to your colour in a soft wave. Early on, the temptation is to flip as many as possible. The first three guests of the evening, Lantern Moth, Copper Heron and Amber Fox, play exactly that way, which makes them patient teachers. Middlegame From 19:30 the Twilight rivals arrive. Lilac Owl, Violet Lynx and Mauve Stag read two moves ahead, value the edges and guard the corners, so shape starts to matter more than numbers. A small lamp above the board shows or hides the legal moves, and the clock on the Evening Ladder runs from 18:40 towards 22:00, with each guest appearing only after the previous one has been outplayed. Endgame Midnight belongs to Indigo Crane, Velvet Wolf and Moonless Raven. They search deep and starve you of moves, and the last guest of the night looks four moves ahead and plays the closing squares precisely. When neither side can move, every disc is counted, and a wider margin brings more of the three stars available against each rival, 27 across the ladder.
