Full description
MoonRef is a moon phase calendar that runs entirely on your device. It shows the moon phase for any date you choose, the exact percentage of the disc that is lit, the Moon's age in days, moonrise and moonset for your location, and a month calendar with the phase drawn on every day. No internet connection, no GPS, no account. WHAT YOU CAN DO - Read the current phase with the exact illuminated percentage, the Moon's age in days since the last new moon, waxing or waning, and its distance from Earth in kilometres. - Type any date, past or future, and the phase, age, distance, rise and set times and upcoming phases update for it. - Check moonrise and moonset for where you are. Pick one of 22 built-in cities or type your own latitude and longitude, and your choice is kept for next time. - Scroll a month calendar that draws the real phase shape on every day and highlights today. - Count down the days to the next full moon and the next new moon, each shown with its date. - Read the dates of the next eight principal phases, new, first quarter, full and last quarter. - Learn what each of the eight phases means in plain language, and see the traditional almanac name of each full moon, from the Wolf Moon in January to the Cold Moon in December. - Read it in light or dark, following your system setting. THE MOON PHASE CALENDAR The calendar draws a small Moon on every day of the month, shaped to that day's real illumination and lit as seen from the northern hemisphere, so one glance shows the whole cycle. Today is highlighted, the days carrying a new moon, first quarter, full moon or last quarter are outlined, and a list under the grid gives those dates with that month's traditional full moon name. MOONRISE AND MOONSET Set your position once and MoonRef keeps it: one of 22 cities across six continents, or your own latitude and longitude. The app reports the moonrise and moonset for that date, and says plainly when the Moon stays up all day or never clears the horizon at high latitudes. HOW IT IS WORKED OUT Everything is calculated on the device from the periodic terms of the lunar and solar theory, following Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms. The illuminated fraction is derived from the real Sun, Earth and Moon geometry rather than an approximation of the cycle, and the new, quarter and full instants are solved with their periodic corrections rather than rounded to a whole day. Moonrise and moonset come from tracking the Moon's altitude through the day and refining the moment it crosses the horizon. WHO IT IS FOR Night photographers choosing a bright night or a dark one. Campers, hikers, anglers and hunters planning by moonlight. Gardeners who sow by the lunar calendar, and anyone who likes knowing what the Moon is doing tonight. PRIVACY MoonRef makes no network requests and never asks for location permission. The city or the coordinates you pick stay on your device. There are no accounts, no ads and no analytics. QUESTIONS Does it work without a signal? Yes. Every calculation happens on the phone, so the moon phase, the calendar and the rise and set times work in a tent, on a boat or in the air. Does it need location permission? No, you pick a city or type coordinates instead. How far ahead can I look? As far as you want, past or future. MoonRef is a planning tool, not a survey grade ephemeris. Rise and set times ignore local terrain and unusual atmospheric refraction. For survey work, consult an official ephemeris.
