Full description
Which First shows a child what is happening now, and what happens next. That is all it does, and it is usually enough. Most difficulty around transitions comes from not knowing what is coming — not from unwillingness. It uses your photographs. A picture of your child's own toothbrush, their own shoes, their own front door. Twenty-one photographs are included so you can start tonight, but your own are better, and the app is built around that. Your child chooses the order. You decide what is in the day. Where two things can happen in either order, the board asks "which first?" — and the answer is theirs. Choosing is not a prize and not a bargain — it is simply how the day gets arranged. It never bargains. There are no points, no stars, no streaks and no praise. Finishing a step is acknowledged, not celebrated. A day with three things left undone is a day, not a failure. Asking for help is not failing. A child who does not want to choose can tap "I need help", and nothing advances until someone comes. There is no timer counting them down. It works with no internet, ever. No account, no sign-in, no cloud, no analytics, no advertising. On Android the app asks for no permissions — not even internet access — so it cannot send anything anywhere, whatever it might try. Your photographs stay on your device. It grows with the child. Two cards, or three, or up to eight. Across the screen or down it, like a strip on the wall. Words on the cards, or no words at all for a child who does not read yet. Set up is behind a password you choose, so the child's screen stays the child's screen. Made for parents, teachers, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists — and free to any school or therapist who asks. If Which First would help your child and you cannot afford it, write to us and we will give it to you.

What's new

The biggest update since launch. • Two new boards: My time, a disc that empties while you wait, and My feelings — how I feel, and how big. • Words spoken aloud in your family's language, or in your own recorded voice. • More than one child, each with their own routines. • Share a routine as one file, with its photos and recordings. • A short introduction, in English and Vietnamese and other languages. Still no internet, no account, no ads.
