Tollcombe Bells

Every learner in a ringing chamber hears the same advice: learn the line. Tollcombe Bells is a place to do that between practice nights, without a tower, a rope or a band waiting for you. **Methods** Seven plain courses to start: Plain Hunt on five and six, Plain Bob Doubles, Minor and Major, Grandsire Doubles and Little Bob Minor. Each one is generated from its place notation, so the rows are exact — sixty changes for Plain Bob Minor, thirty for Grandsire Doubles, a hundred and twelve for Plain Bob Major. Pick the bell you ring and every page follows it. **Blue line** The full plain course written out row by row, with your bell traced in blue and the treble in red, the way ringers have learned methods for generations. Faint rules mark each lead end, so the dodges and the places show up where they belong. **Ring** The practice. The app shows the current change with your bell highlighted and asks where it strikes next. Answer right and the course moves on; answer wrong and it tells you what the bell actually does — hunts up, hunts down, makes places, leads, lies. A clean run is counted, and the best run for each method is kept. **Words** Rounds, change, place notation, hunting, making places, dodge, lead, plain course, blue line and sally — explained in a sentence or two each, for the learner who nodded along at the last practice. **Quietly** There is no audio anywhere; it is a method trainer, not a simulator, and it can be used on a bus. Nothing is sent from the phone and the app asks for no permissions.
