Full description
Taiwan's sunsets, and how to actually catch one. Sunset Chasing Taiwan tells you where to watch tonight's sunset — which of 100+ spots across Taiwan will have the best sky, scored at each place, and how to get home afterward. Most spots are ones I've been to, photographed and rated myself. The rest are well-known places I haven't reached yet: they carry a forecast, directions and either a licensed photo by another photographer, credited on the spot, or no photo at all until someone sends one. None of them gets ratings until I've stood there. No scraped listings. TONIGHT'S SKY, SCORED PER SPOT Open any spot and it pulls the forecast for that exact location at that evening's sunset hour, then scores it out of 100 — cloud cover, humidity, visibility, and whether rain or fog is going to ruin it. The scoring is built around what makes a good sunset, not a nice afternoon: 30–70% cloud catches color and scores highest, a clear sky in clean air is good but never spectacular, and overcast, haze and rain pull it down. You get SPECTACULAR, GOOD, FAIR, MUTED or POOR at a glance, plus the golden hour for that spot. FOUR RATINGS, FROM SOMEONE WHO WENT • Sunset perspective — how good the view actually is • Crowded factor — how many people you'll be sharing it with • Hike difficulty — how much work it takes to reach the viewpoint • Return factor — how hard it is to get home once it's dark That last one is the rating nobody else gives you. Plenty of Taiwan's best sunset spots are up a mountain served by a bus that stops before the sky finishes. GETTING THERE AND BACK Every spot lists its nearest station or stop, the last train or bus of the night, and a link to that line's timetable. Parking and entry where they matter, and whether the place is lit after dark. WHERE THE SPOTS ARE The deepest coverage is Greater Taipei — nearly half of them, all visited and rated — because that's where I've spent most of my time. The rest run the length of the west coast from Keelung to Kaohsiung and out to Kinmen, Penghu, Green Island, Lanyu and Xiaoliuqiu, so wherever you are, the map shows you tonight's best sky nearby. If you're in Taipei, this is the most thorough sunset guide to the city that exists. Elsewhere in Taiwan you'll find the famous spots scored and mapped, and the ones I've been to written up in full. HUNDREDS OF PHOTOS Every spot I've visited has its own gallery, shot there at sunset. Tap any photo for the full-size version. They're there so you know what you're getting before you spend an hour traveling to it. Spots I haven't photographed yet say so, and you can send me yours. TOLD ONLY WHEN IT'S WORTH IT Optional, and off until you turn it on. Pick a region, a time and how good the sky has to be, and the app tells you when a sunset there is worth the trip — naming the spot and its score while there's still time to get there. On a gray week you'll hear nothing. It asks for a region, not your location, and one tap turns it off. FREE AND FULL Six spots are free forever, including Dadaocheng Pier, Elephant Mountain, Maokong and Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf, with tonight's sky score for each. Unlocking gives you every spot, the seven-day outlook, and the alerts. Pay monthly if you're here for a trip, yearly if you live here, or once for lifetime. Subscriptions renew until you cancel in Google Play. BUILT FOR REAL USE • Works offline — every spot, every write-up and every photo is inside the app • No account, no sign-up, no email address • No ads, and nothing about you is ever sold • Tap "Nearest to me" and it sorts by distance — your location never leaves your phone, and everything else works without it The forecast lookup sends only the spots' own coordinates, nothing about you. If you turn the alert on, all that's stored is the region and time you picked. Go outside. The sky's doing something.

What's new

Now in Traditional Chinese: the whole app, including every spot's write-up and transit details, switches with your phone's language or the 中/EN button. 3 new sunset spots: Dahu Park, Xinshan Reservoir and Yuanshan in Sanxia. New photos at Taipei 101, Dadaocheng, Battleship Rock, Crescent Bridge, Fuzhou Shan Park, Keelung Mountain and Sun Moon Lake. The Sunday outlook has its own switch, and the map is fixed.
