Full description
Bonsai is a quiet daily habit tracker on warm paper: a tree shaped a little at a time, on most days, for years. Days grow blooms as you tend them — bigger when you did more. Everything you log stays on your phone, in one file. No account, no sign-up, no sync, no ads, no analytics. It makes no network requests at all: it works on a plane, in a tunnel, on a phone that has never been online. Most habit trackers are built to make you anxious. Red squares, broken chains, a number that shames you for taking a Sunday off. This is a habit tracker built to be looked at rather than obeyed — a month of your days, each one flowering a little, and a few honest numbers underneath if you want them. The month A calendar where every logged day grows a bloom: one mark per habit, sized against that habit's own best day, so three glasses of water and a forty-five minute walk read at the same strength. Tap any day to log it. Swipe to change month. Chips under the calendar filter it to a single habit. If blooms are too much, one small dot per habit is a setting. Any month, or a whole year, can be drawn out as a poster to keep, print or send. Logging a day One row per habit, in the shape that habit is actually measured: - Yes or no — did I do it today? - Quantity — how many, in a unit you name yourself - Duration — how long, in minutes - A few words — for the habits a number cannot hold Underneath them, a note for the day: a line of journal for whatever the numbers missed. When yesterday holds something today is missing, "Same as yesterday" fills only the gaps, in one tap. The whole daily routine takes about a minute. On your home screen Two widgets. The month of blooms, so a glance at your phone is a glance at your garden. And today's habits, where a tap ticks the yes-or-no ones without opening the app. Both resize, and neither needs a permission. The numbers, quietly One habit at a time. Your current streak. How consistent you have been across the last thirty days, and whether that is drifting up or down against the thirty before. Which weekday keeps breaking the run. A history chart you can read by week or by month. Nothing here is ranked against anybody. One gentle nudge, if you want one A single daily reminder, on the weekdays and at the time you choose, in one of three voices: gentle, plain or playful. After a while it offers you the hour you usually log at. Turn it off and it is completely silent. Planting and pulling out Give a habit a name, a colour from thirty-three, and the way it should be measured. Rename it, recolour it or pull it out later. Pulling one out takes its history with it, and the app says so first. What is not here No account, no email address, no cloud, no sync, no server. No ads, no in-app purchases, no subscription. No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising ID, no third-party tracking. No feed, no leaderboard, no friends to be compared against. No permission to read your location, contacts, photos or files. And no internet permission — Play's own permission list for this app has no internet line in it. Privacy, plainly Bonsai collects nothing, because there is nowhere for it to send anything. Your habits, entries and notes live in one SQLite database in the app's own private storage. Android's automatic cloud backup is switched off, so it is not copied to Google Drive either. Which is why the way out is unconditional. Settings writes everything — every habit, every day, every note — into one file: an archive this app reads back on a new phone, or a spreadsheet that opens anywhere. Made carefully Two themes: warm paper, and a night one that is still warm rather than cold grey — follow your device, or pin either. Hand-drawn shapes, corners never quite circles, every colour measured for contrast. Reduce Motion is honoured, every control is labelled for screen readers, and the calendar was designed to be legible before it was pretty. Android 7.0 or later. English only for now.

What's new

The first release. A quiet daily habit tracker on warm paper — a tree shaped a little at a time. Days grow blooms as you tend them, bigger when you did more. Two home-screen widgets, a warm night theme, and any month or a whole year drawn out as a poster. Nothing is counted or capped: as many habits as you like, as much history as you like, and an export that writes it all out to a file you keep. Everything stays on your phone. No account, no sync, no permission to use the internet.
