On an open network, people nearby could see anything not encrypted, so the score drops. • Login page: is a captive portal between you and the internet, and is the login page encrypted? • Who answers your lookups: a real DNS check compares this network's answers with trusted encrypted DNS, plus DNS signing • Anyone in between: are certificates valid, and do test pages arrive unchanged? • Hidden meddling: signs of a downgrade from HTTPS to HTTP, or of traffic sent through a hidden proxy.
