Full description
"Is it actually loud in here, or is it just me?" The neighbor's bass at midnight, the office that never feels quiet, the restaurant where you leave hoarse from shouting — without a number, it's your word against theirs, and you can't tell whether the white-noise machine, the new fan, or the closed window actually changed anything. Sound Meter puts a number on it. Open the app, grant microphone access once, and the decibel level of the room is on screen in real time — a color-coded gauge from Quiet to Dangerous, session MIN/AVG/MAX, and a plain-language reference (whisper, conversation, vacuum, concert) so the number means something immediately. KEY FEATURES • Live dB readout — real-time sound level from the phone microphone • Color-coded gauge — four zones (Quiet, Moderate, Loud, Dangerous) readable at a glance • MIN / AVG / MAX session stats — capture the range of a room, not just one moment • Real-world references — every level mapped to a familiar sound, from rustling leaves to a rock concert • On-device processing — microphone input is analyzed locally and never recorded or uploaded • No setup — open, grant mic access once, measure MADE FOR • Checking how quiet a bedroom, nursery, or home office really is — and whether changes help • Gauging a restaurant, gym, or open-plan office before committing to a table or desk • Comparing appliance noise: which fan, HVAC setting, or dishwasher is actually quieter • Documenting a recurring noise pattern with comparable MIN/AVG/MAX numbers • Curious people who want to know what 60 dB feels like in their own kitchen ABOUT ACCURACY Phone microphones differ, so readings are indicative, not certified. Sound Meter is not a calibrated SPL instrument and should not be used for OSHA, workplace-compliance, medical, or hearing-protection decisions. For everyday "how loud is this room" questions, it is exactly the right tool.

What's new

New: Calibrate — add or remove decibels to match a reference meter. Pause now holds when you switch apps and come back. Average uses true sound energy; Max catches short peaks. Clear message when another app or a call holds the microphone.
