Full description
An arrow puzzle refers to a class of logic, word, or spatial grid puzzles that rely on directional arrows to dictate movement, mathematical constraints, or word placement. 1. Arrow Logic Puzzles (Grid & Pointer) In pure logic and tournament contexts (such as the World Puzzle Championship), an arrow puzzle typically consists of a grid containing numbers and arrows pointing in various orthogonal or diagonal directions. Objective: Determine the orientation of hidden arrows or place arrows into empty cells so that every numbered cell matches the count of arrows pointing directly at it along a straight line of sight. Core Mechanics: Arrows can point in 4 orthogonal (up, down, left, right) or 8 compass directions. A number N in a cell means exactly N arrows in the entire row, column, or diagonal line are aimed directly at that specific cell. Cells containing numbers usually do not contain arrows. Solving Strategy: Zero Constraints: If a cell displays 0, eliminate all possible arrow orientations along its sightlines that would face inward. Maximum Counts: If a cell requires a count equal to the total available cells along its sightlines, every arrow in those lines must face directly toward it. Line-of-Sight Overlaps: Look for intersections where two numbers place contradictory or mutually required demands on a single arrow's orientation. 2. Arrow Sudoku A popular variant of standard Sudoku that combines numerical placement with modular arithmetic and path summation. Objective: Fill a standard 9×9 grid with digits 1–9 adhering to classic Sudoku rules, while satisfying specific arrow constraints drawn over the grid. Core Mechanics: Shapes with a circle (the bulb) and a connected line (the stem) ending in an arrowhead span across several cells. The digit in the circle must equal the exact sum of all digits lying along the connected stem. Digits may repeat along a stem as long as standard row, column, and box Sudoku rules are not violated. Solving Strategy: Bulb Bounds: Long stems have high minimum sums (e.g., a 3-cell stem with distinct digits has a minimum sum of 1+2+3=6, restricting the bulb to 6, 7, 8, or 9). Digit Parity & Overlaps: If two arrows share stems or bulbs within the same 3×3 box, strict mathematical elimination isolates single values quickly. 3. Arrow Maze (Directional / Pointer Maze) A navigational puzzle format where the arrows define the valid moves across a grid. Objective: Find a continuous path from a designated start cell to the target goal cell. Core Mechanics: Each cell contains an arrow pointing in a specific direction. When occupying a cell, the solver can only move in the direction indicated by the arrow. In classic variants, a player can move any number of spaces in that direction; in strict variants, a move is restricted to a fixed step size or until hitting a barrier. Solving Strategy: Reverse Pathfinding: Work backward from the goal cell to identify which arrows could reach it, immediately cutting out dead-end branches. 4. Arrowords (Arrow Crosswords) A variant of the standard crossword puzzle originating in Scandinavia and widely popular in Europe. Objective: Fill a grid of intersecting words using given clues. Core Mechanics: Instead of separate clue lists ("Across" and "Down"), the clues are printed directly inside the non-playable grid squares. An arrow originates from the clue box and points directly to the first letter square of the corresponding answer. Arrow paths can go straight horizontally/vertically or turn at a 90 ∘
