Otolan Drift

Otolan Drift is a plotting table for leeway drift, worked the way it is worked on paper. You enter the hours yourself - wind, current, and which of fourteen drift objects you are following - and the arithmetic is done in front of you. PLEASE READ FIRST This is a study and plotting bench for learning and rehearsing the method. It is not an operational response tool and must not be used as one. THE BENCH Leeway angle and speed per leg, the chained track, the datum it lands on, the divergence ellipse around it, and a search pattern sized to cover it. Nothing is fetched and nothing is guessed: every figure comes from the configuration in front of you and can be checked by hand. BUILD THE CASE HOUR BY HOUR A ladder of legs you edit one at a time, with forward drift and back-drift to flip between. Change any hour and the datum, the ellipse and the sweep width resettle. THE LIBRARY Fourteen leeway objects and seven pieces of drift-study kit, each with its own leeway slope, crosswind envelope and downwind coefficients. Lay any two objects over one another on the same chart to read the difference off directly. BACK-DRIFT A PAPER PLOT Photograph the plotting sheet, drop a sighting pin at each observed position with the time it was taken, and every pin is back-drifted to one common clock. Otolan Drift reports where they converge and how far apart they still sit, and that convergence can be sent straight to the bench as a starting position. THE CASE BOOK Saved runs with their datum bearing and range, and any two set side by side with the differences worked out. ON THE DEVICE Everything is stored on the phone, in your own units, and nothing is asked of the network.
