Full description
Quire is a journal that writes plain Markdown into a folder you choose. One file per day, named for the day it holds: your-folder/2026/08/2026-08-31.md Each time you write, a timestamped block is appended. Nothing already in the file is overwritten. What you end up with is a folder of readable text files that will still open in any editor, on any device, long after this app is gone. THE FOLDER IS THE DATABASE There is no second copy of your writing inside the app, no cache with authority, no export step. Every read comes from the folder; every write lands in it. Edit a file in Obsidian or a text editor and Quire shows the edit. Uninstall Quire and nothing of yours goes with it. You choose the folder once, through Android's own picker. Quire is granted that folder and nothing else. It cannot list, read, or write anywhere outside it, and it never asks for broad storage access. NO NETWORK, STRUCTURALLY Quire does not declare the INTERNET permission. The app is not merely configured to stay offline; it is incapable of a network call. No analytics, no crash reporting, no accounts, no advertising, no sync. That is a property of how the app is built rather than a promise made in a policy, and it can be verified on the installed package. If you want the folder synced, use whatever already syncs your files. Quire does not reimplement that. NOTHING SCORES YOU No streaks. No counts. No notifications. No badges. No "you haven't written in twelve days." The archive is a calendar. A day you did not write is a plain number on the same paper as one you did, tappable, leading to a page that offers to open it. Filling in a day you missed is one of the most useful things a journal does, so it is made easy. Nothing is greyed out, struck through, or added up. No screen in Quire will tell you how you are doing. WRITING The keyboard is up before the screen has settled. Writing is meant to cost nothing. Revising is different. Past blocks take a long press to edit, because a record that gets constantly rewritten stops being a record of what was actually thought. And when an entry is written outside its own time - a day filled in later, a block reworded a week on - the file says so in plain words beside the timestamp. Not as a mark against you. Because it is true, and a record whose dates quietly lie is worth less than no record at all. THE HOME SCREEN WIDGET Today's last words sit on the home screen and open straight into writing. That is the only way Quire reaches you, and it is a mechanism you can remove by dragging it off the screen. THE FORMAT Markdown, with "## HH:MM" headings and optional YAML frontmatter. No proprietary format, no database, no attachments held by pointer. If it cannot be read with cat, it does not belong in the file. WHAT IS IN VERSION 1 - One Markdown file per day, in a folder you pick - Append-only timestamped blocks - A calendar archive reaching every day, written or not - Read view with Markdown rendering - Home-screen widget showing today - Optional YAML frontmatter - Fully offline WHAT IS NOT IN VERSION 1 - No search across the folder yet - No tags - No "on this day" - No iOS version - No sync, no account, no in-app purchases Made quietly, for people who want their own words back.

What's new

The first public release. Quire writes one Markdown file per day into a folder you choose, and appends a timestamped block each time you write. The folder is the only copy — edit the files anywhere, or leave the app entirely, and your writing stays where it is. Includes the calendar archive, the read view, and the home-screen widget. No account, no network, nothing counting how often you turn up.
