Most tile calculators divide the room area by the tile size. Tile does not sit on the floor that way, which is how you end up with a spare box or two short. This one counts the tile plus its grout joint, because that is what occupies the floor. On 12" tile with a 1/4" joint the difference is about 4%. On mosaics it is closer to 20%. If that piece comes out at an inch it looks wrong, and it breaks while you are cutting it. You find out before you start: how wide that last piece lands, and what centring the layout would give you instead. On a wall it knows the top course dies under the cabinets, so it will not warn you about a cut nobody is ever going to see.
