Full description
[PLEASE READ FIRST] This app only rewrites a coordinate from one notation into another. It does not look up where you are, and it shows no map. ────────── 🌐 Lat Long Converter DMS — one place, written three ways 35°41'22.4", 35°41.3734' and 35.689556 are all the same place. DMS 35°41'22.4" … charts, hiking maps, photo metadata DDM 35°41.3734' … GPS receivers, marine and aviation DD 35.689556 … map apps, spreadsheets, code Copying one into another is where mistakes happen. That is what this app is for. ■ Three tabs ▪ From DMS … degrees, minutes and seconds in; decimal degrees (6 places) and DDM out ▪ From decimal … one decimal value in; DMS and DDM out ▪ On the ground … a latitude in; the length of a degree, minute and second of both longitude and latitude there ■ Minutes and seconds accept decimals A GPS receiver shows 35°41.3734' — that is DDM, with a decimal on the minutes. Put the decimal in the minutes field, leave seconds at 0, and it goes in. One more notation, without one more input field. ■ Seconds carry over at 60 Converting 35.999999 gives 59.9964 seconds. Rounded to one decimal that becomes 60.0. 35°59'60.0" is wrong; 36°0'0.0" is right. The arithmetic is right; this only shows up after rounding. Minutes carry over the same way when they would round to 60.0000. ■ A minus sign means South or West There is no such thing as a negative second. -33.868806 and 33°52'7.7" S say exactly the same thing. The sign is another way of writing the direction, not part of the number. So this app never asks you to type a minus. It takes values from zero up and shows both readings: "If N or E: +35.689556" and "If S or W: -35.689556". ■ DDM and DMS are easy to confuse Both 35°41.3734' and 35°41'22.4" contain "41", but they do not mean the same thing. Read the decimal part of 41.3734' as seconds — 41'37.3" — and you are 14.9 seconds out. For latitude that is about 460 m. ■ Six decimal places The sixth decimal of a degree is about 11 cm on the ground. Five places is about 1.1 m; four places is about 11 m. That is why map apps write six. ■ How far is a degree on the ground Enter a latitude and you get the distance there. Equator … one degree of longitude is 111.195 km 30° N … 96.298 km 45° N … 78.627 km 60° N … 55.597 km (exactly half) The pole … 0 km A degree of latitude stays 111.195 km everywhere. So "0.001 degrees" is not the same distance north-south as it is east-west. ■ A minute of latitude is almost a nautical mile One minute of latitude is 1.8532 km; a nautical mile is exactly 1.852 km. The mile was defined by rounding that minute, so the two nearly agree — but not exactly. The difference is about 1.25 m. ■ The Earth is taken as a sphere of radius 6,371 km The real Earth is slightly flattened, so a degree of latitude varies by about a kilometer. The lengths this app gives are approximate. ■ Four example buttons Equator (0°) / The pole (90°) / Japan time meridian (135°) / Three notations (35.689556°). Japanese law sets the country's clock by the meridian at exactly 135° East. No real places: their coordinates depend on which point you pick. ■ Good for ▪ Turning 35°41'22.4" from a photo into the decimal form a search box takes ▪ Checking where a receiver's 35°41.3734' falls in seconds ▪ Working out whether -33.868806 means South or West ▪ Finding out how far "0.0001 degrees" actually is ■ Features ▪ No account, no sign-in. Nothing you type is sent anywhere ▪ No location permission is requested at all ▪ One screen only. There is no settings page ▪ Japanese and English (follows the device language) ▪ Five recent entries, tap to bring one back ▪ Reference tables and six short notes Note: the "On the ground" tab takes a latitude, so it accepts 0 to 90. The DMS and decimal tabs also take longitudes, so they accept 0 to 180. ────────── NISAKE GAME
