The platform accommodates both physical and fully remote learning environments by offering diverse, independent check-in modalities. This multi-layered approach ensures that localized constraints—such as poor connectivity, dead device batteries, or network outages—never compromise accurate student tracking. IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) proximity detection — the lecturer's device continuously broadcasts a short-range, rotating, cryptographically signed signal. Nearby student phones detect it in the background and are marked present automatically — no scanning, no tapping. • BLE relay for large venues — Bluetooth's range is naturally limited. In bigger halls, a student device that has already picked up the lecturer's signal quietly re-broadcasts it onward, extending real coverage across the room in a chain, with no extra hardware or lecturer setup. • QR code scanning — the lecturer's screen shows a QR code that refreshes every few seconds; students scan it for an instant, contactless check-in. A useful backup when Bluetooth is off or unavailable. • PIN entry, built to work fully offline — the lecturer displays a rotating numeric PIN. Students type it in, and the app verifies it locally against a signed session already cached on the device — no live server round-trip required, so it keeps working with no signal at all. • Wi-Fi hotspot check-in — the lecturer's device can host its own local Wi-Fi hotspot, with connection details shared automatically over BLE. A student who joins submits attendance directly to the lecturer's device over the local network — working with zero internet access on either side, syncing to the server once connectivity returns. • Manual marking and delegation — lecturers (or a staff member they've delegated to) can always mark or correct attendance by hand from the live roster as a catch-all. ONLINE ATTENDANCE • Biometric passkey verification — checking into an online session uses your phone's own fingerprint or face unlock, not a typed password. The check-in is cryptographically tied to your specific device, and your biometric data never leaves your phone. • Meeting invites — lecturers send a join link, passcode, and message straight to every enrolled student's device the moment an online session opens. Every check-in method is tied to the checking-in device and, where supported, cryptographically signed, making it significantly harder for one person to check in on behalf of another ("buddy punching"). Because in-person methods verify and queue locally first, a spotty connection in a lecture hall never costs a student their attendance — it syncs the moment the device reconnects. Courses, units, and enrollments stay scoped to your own institution only. PRIVACY-RESPECTING BY DESIGN Your password is stored as a salted hash, never in plain text. All traffic is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). Location permission, where requested, is used only as an Android OS requirement for Bluetooth scanning — MarkWise Africa never reads or stores your GPS coordinates. You can delete your account and personal data at any time from Settings. MarkWise Africa is provided to you through your institution, which manages your enrollment and remains responsible for how attendance records are used academically.
