Lock Pattern

Lock Pattern is a deduction puzzle built around a brass combination lock. Every lock hides a code. Set the drums, try it, and read the answer: green where a number sits on the right dial, amber where it belongs on another dial, grey where it is not in the code at all. Then think, turn, and try again - within a tight budget of tries. HONEST MARKS The marks are scored against the whole code, the way a proper deduction game does it. A number that appears once in the code can earn only one mark no matter how many dials you set to it, so the feedback never lies and never leaks more than it should. Amber tells you a number is in play; green tells you where. Everything else is reasoning. FIVE TIERS Apprentice starts with three dials and six numbers. Journeyman adds a dial. Locksmith widens the drums to eight numbers. Master runs five dials, and Grandmaster puts six dials of ten numbers behind ten tries. Tiers open as you prove yourself on the one before. Every lock is numbered and fixed - lock #7 at a tier is the same lock for everyone - so a personal best means something. STARS AND STREAKS Par is the number of dials plus one. Open a lock within par with no hints and it is a clean pick - three stars. Two stars for a comfortable solve, one for getting it open at all. Streaks count consecutive opens; a jammed lock resets them. HINT KEYS Stuck? A hint key reveals one dial and locks it in place. You start with three and earn more with every lock you open, one to three a time depending on the tier. Hints cost you the three-star rating, never the tries.
