Hikayat: Arabic Kids Stories

Hikayat is a library of thirty illustrated stories for children aged 2 to 7, written in Arabic first and read aloud in Modern Standard Arabic. STORIES FROM THEIR OWN WORLD These are not stories translated into Arabic. Every one was written in Arabic from the first line, and set somewhere your child knows: a first Ramadan fast, Eid money, the call to prayer carrying across a valley, a dish sent to the neighbours. There is heritage too — Juha and his donkey, a pearl diver, a falcon set free, grandfather's palm tree, the incense road. And in each one a good habit the child lives through with its characters: greeting others, honesty, patience, kindness to elders and to animals. READ ALOUD, WORD BY WORD A calm Arabic voice narrates every page in Fusha, and each word lights up as it is spoken. The text is fully vowelled, so a child who cannot read yet follows the line, and a child who is starting to read has something to practise on. ARABIC AND ENGLISH Every story comes in Arabic and in English, with the same pictures and its own narration in each. Switch the app's language and the stories switch with it — useful for a child growing up between two languages. PITCHED TO YOUR CHILD'S AGE Tell the app who is listening, and the library shows the stories that suit them, with each page waiting the right length of time before it turns. WHEN IT IS TIME FOR BED In the evening the library suggests a bedtime story. When the story ends, a Sleep button says goodnight and fades the screen slowly to black, and it stays there.
