Full description
Kotonoha is an Android app to learn Japanese with a JLPT N5–N1 course and a reader for your books and manga. Study in English or Arabic, then meet lesson words in novels, PDFs and manga: tap to look them up, save them to a deck and review them before they fade. ★ STUDY FROM KANA TO JLPT N1 • 9,661 words in 198 themed lessons, with readings, meanings and audio; 8,877 have an English example sentence. • 1,246 grammar points with explanations, formations, examples, contrast drills and a mind map, plus 50 grammar mock exams—10 per level—modelled on the JLPT grammar-form section. • An adaptive placement test finds your level; the daily Path plans study, reviews and reading. • Hiragana and katakana charts with audio. • Browse 3,730 kanji; learn through words, component maps and radicals, then practise handwriting with checks for kanji stroke order, direction, length and placement. • FSRS-6 spaced repetition schedules words and kanji; grammar has its own spaced-review schedule. • Create personal decks, save words from study or reading, and import or export .apkg decks. ★ READ JAPANESE, NOT JUST LESSONS Read EPUB and PDF books or manga with a dictionary on the page. • Tap any word, even a conjugated one, to see its dictionary form, reading, meaning, examples, JLPT level and kanji details. • Tap a sentence in supported text views to open its words and the grammar points detected in it. Tap any word in the card to see its dictionary entry. • Where available, sentence analysis labels roles such as topic, actor and object, plus relationships such as cause, condition and contrast. In validation testing it labelled 499 of 1,246 sentences (about 40%); structures it cannot label reliably are left out rather than guessed. • See each book's vocabulary level and, for text-based books only, its grammar level. The overall JLPT level uses the harder available measure. • EPUB and reflowed PDFs offer furigana and a switch between horizontal and vertical (tategaki) Japanese. Page-faithful PDFs keep the original layout and support direct word lookup, including inside tables. • Import EPUB, PDF, CBZ, ZIP, CBR, RAR, 7z, CB7, CBT and TAR. • Read manga with a dictionary using on-device OCR (text recognition). Separate engines handle speech bubbles and scanned pages; box a passage to open the sentence card. Recognition works best on clean printed text, and pages are not uploaded. • Select a passage for translation, or read Japanese websites with tap-to-look-up. Kotonoha includes no books or manga; it reads files you own. ★ ARABIC, DICTIONARY AND OFFLINE USE Learn Japanese through Arabic with a right-to-left interface, Arabic course meanings, grammar explanations, translations for many examples and sentence-analysis labels. English is also available. The extended dictionary is English. Search offline by romaji, kana, kanji or English. The dictionary and all study features work without a connection. Downloads, translation, websites, backup and rewarded videos require one. No account is required. Optional Google sign-in enables backup and sync through your Google Drive; book and manga files are not synced. ★ FREE USE AND OPTIONAL PLANS Every level and feature can be unlocked with leaves, the in-app currency. Leaves are earned daily or by choosing to watch a rewarded video; reading also costs leaves by the minute. Rewarded videos are the only ads: no banner or pop-up ads, and never an ad inside a book, PDF or manga reader. Plus removes leaf costs for N5–N3 study and includes 150 text-reading minutes or 300 manga-reading minutes each day. Unlimited removes leaf costs for all levels and includes unlimited reading. Both optional plans renew automatically, offer monthly or yearly billing at country-specific prices, and can be cancelled in Google Play. Eligible accounts may receive a 7-day free trial, which then renews as a paid plan unless cancelled; Google Play shows the offer and local price before purchase. Requires Android 7.0 or later.

What's new

Watching an ad now earns twenty leaves instead of five, and a new account is welcomed with a hundred rather than twenty. Books and manga are handled better too: a file whose pages carry real text simply opens as a book, and only a file made entirely of pictures asks whether to read its words with the engine trained on books or on manga. You can change that answer later in Settings, where any title can also be moved between the two readers. Restored and re-imported books keep their place.
