Full description
Learn Japanese from zero to JLPT N1 with a method built around one rule: you produce the answer instead of picking it from a list. Tanuki takes a complete beginner through hiragana and katakana, then up the JLPT ladder from N5 to N1. Reviews are timed so the Japanese you learn actually stays. START WITH KANA, NOT ROMAJI Written Japanese begins with two syllabaries. Tanuki teaches hiragana and katakana first, tracing each character in the correct stroke order until your hand knows it without thinking. Romaji appears only during this first phase. Once the kana are yours, every screen looks the way Japanese really looks: kana and kanji, with furigana above any kanji you have not learned yet. JLPT VOCABULARY, KANJI AND GRAMMAR 10,905 Japanese words with audio, sorted by JLPT level from N5 to N1. 2,387 kanji flashcards with stroke order, component breakdowns and a mnemonic story for each character. 72 grammar points, each with worked examples and drills. Every word carries its pitch accent, so you learn how Japanese sounds, not only how it is written. Preparing for the JLPT, taking the JFT-Basic test on the Specified Skilled Worker route, or simply hoping your Japanese sticks? Same ladder, same method. SPACED REPETITION THAT ADAPTS TO YOU Reviews run on FSRS, a modern spaced repetition algorithm that brings each word, kanji and grammar point back right before you would forget it. Miss a day and your Japanese reviews quietly reschedule. There is no streak to protect, so nothing breaks when life gets in the way. WRITE THE ANSWER, DO NOT GUESS IT Multiple choice appears once, on first exposure. After that you type the answer on a Japanese keyboard, or trace the kanji. It is harder than tapping a choice, and that is the point: recognition fades fast, and production is what survives. READING PRACTICE FROM WEEK ONE Graded reading passages are built only from words and grammar you already know, and you can tap any word to look it up, so you read whole Japanese sentences early and keep reading as your vocabulary grows. Reading is where the words you have studied turn into Japanese you understand. FREE AND PRO Hiragana, katakana and all of JLPT N5 are free for good, so you can learn Japanese to a solid beginner level with no time limit and no account required. Tanuki Pro opens N4, N3, N2 and N1: monthly, yearly, or Tanuki Lifetime, a one-time purchase if you would rather not subscribe. OFFLINE BY DEFAULT Lessons, reviews and your progress live on your device, so a lost signal never costs you a review. Audio for the paid levels downloads quietly in the background as you reach them, and stays on the device once it has arrived. SUBSCRIPTION TERMS Tanuki Pro is sold as a monthly plan (US$8.99) or a yearly plan (US$59.99). Tanuki Lifetime is a one-time purchase (US$99.99) and never renews. Prices differ by region, and the exact amount is shown in the app before you buy. Payment is charged to your Google Play account at confirmation. A subscription renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Manage or cancel anytime in the Play Store under Payments and subscriptions. Tanuki is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Japan Foundation or JEES, which run the JLPT (jlpt.jp), or to the organizers of the JFT-Basic (jftbasic.jp). Official information about the tests, dates and registration is on those sites. Privacy Policy: https://iocodo.com/apps/tanuki/privacy Terms of Use: https://iocodo.com/apps/tanuki/terms

What's new

New words in a lesson now come from one scene, named right under the word, so they hold together as you learn them. Notebook opens with Saved to learn: every word you save yourself, from any level, on top. Listen tells you when pronunciation audio is off and offers to turn it on. A lesson after a break stays a lesson: never more than forty steps. Finishing a session fills your day, and practice counts toward it. Reminders and sync recover on their own on a slow connection.
