Full description
Four people, one weekend away. One of you put the flat on a card, someone else covered the taxi in from the airport, and Thursday's dinner had a plus-one at the table. On the way home everybody tries to work it out from memory, and it ends with money going round in circles — Ben pays Cara, Cara pays Devan, Devan pays Ben. Halbrin does the last step properly. It nets every expense down to one figure per person, then hands you the shortest list of transfers that clears the whole thing. Four people who owe each other in every direction settle in three payments, not nine. WHAT IT DOES • Log an expense once: what it was, who paid for it, and who was in on it. • Split by shares instead of by picking a mode. Everyone starts on one share. Give someone two if they brought a plus-one, or zero to leave them out of that one. • Watch each person's slice update while you type the amount, not after you save. • See where everyone stands: one line per person, is owed or owes. • Settle up in the fewest payments — never more than one less than the number of people on the tab. THE SPLIT IS EXACT TO THE CENT $87.35 between four people is not $21.83 each. Halbrin works entirely in whole cents and hands the three leftover cents to specific people in a fixed order, so the parts always add back up to the total and the same tab always gives the same answer. Nothing is ever stored as a decimal that drifts. ONE TAB AT A TIME Halbrin holds a single tab — a trip, a dinner, a month of a shared flat. Give it a name, put the people on it, log what gets spent, settle up, start a new one. There is no archive, no folder of old tabs and nothing to organise. PICK YOUR OWN SYMBOL Type whatever symbol belongs next to the numbers: $, €, £, ₹, R$, kr. It is only a label. Halbrin never converts between currencies — an offline app has no exchange rate, and quietly applying a stale one would be worse than not offering it at all. Agree the currency before the trip, not after. HONEST ABOUT WHAT IT ISN'T • It does not move money. Halbrin tells you who pays who and how much; the transfer is between you. • It does not sync. Two phones running Halbrin know nothing about each other. • There is no export and no backup file yet. This is the first version and that is the next thing worth building. • There is no history of settled tabs. • It cannot tell you whether someone actually paid you back. NO PERMISSIONS, NONE AT ALL Halbrin requests zero Android permissions, INTERNET included. The app cannot open a network connection because the operating system will not allow it — the promise is enforced by Android rather than by our good intentions. Check it yourself under Settings → Apps → Halbrin → Permissions. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no third-party SDKs of any kind. YOUR DATA STAYS ON THE PHONE The tab lives in a single file inside the app's private storage. Cloud backup and device-to-device transfer are both switched off, so it is not copied to your Google account either. That is worth knowing before you rely on it: uninstalling Halbrin, clearing its data or losing the phone loses the tab, and nobody — including us — can bring it back. WORKS WITH NO SIGNAL On the plane home, in a basement restaurant, abroad with mobile data off. Everything works the same, because none of it ever needed a connection. Under 1.2 MB. Android 8.0 and up. Light and dark, following your system setting.
