Full description
Second Guess — a budget tracker that argues with you Most budget apps just log what you already spent. Second Guess gets in the way before you spend it — with your own numbers and your own words, put back in front of you at the one moment they can still change anything. It won't stop you. It just makes sure you actually decided. THE NUMBER THAT MATTERS Home leads with one figure: what's safe to spend today — your remaining budget divided by the days left in your cycle, minus what you've already spent today. Not a vague monthly total you do the math on yourself. Spend more than that and it turns red and tells you what tomorrow shrinks to. Underneath: a month-end projection, your need-vs-want split, and a no-spend streak counter. IT ARGUES BACK Every want above a threshold you set gets a real case made against it, from your own numbers, not generic warnings: "You don't have this — it's 1,400 more than what's left today. This spend borrows from a day that hasn't happened yet." "This pushes Gadgets to 18,000, past the 12,000 limit you set for yourself." If you typed a reason for wanting something, the app quotes it back at you later: "You said 'bored, scrolling' — is that reason still good now, or was it only good five minutes ago?" NEED OR WANT, EVERY TIME You cannot log a spend without saying which it was. No default, no comfortable third option. Wants also need a one-line reason — typing it out is itself a small deterrent, and it's what the app argues back with later. CATEGORY TIERS, ESPECIALLY LUXURY Every category is tagged Essential, Lifestyle, or Luxury, each with its own monthly cap. Essentials are never questioned; Lifestyle gets a gentle nudge; Luxury gets a hard prompt the instant you'd cross its limit — even if you called it a "need." Marking a luxury category as a need gets called out on the spot. THE WANT LIST AND COOLING-OFF Bigger or impulsive wants go onto a countdown instead of straight through — you choose the delay, an hour to a week. When it expires, the app asks: still want it? Buying it logs the spend honestly; skipping it adds to a running "talked yourself out of" total — the most motivating screen in the app. LOOKING BACK, HONESTLY A few days after a want, the app asks: was it worth it? Rate it 1 to 5. Low scores build a regret total in your reports, so months from now you have an honest record of which spending actually paid off — not just where the money went. INSTANT REPORTS Cycle, last cycle, three months, or all time, with a day-by-day chart, a need-vs-want split, a tier breakdown, per-category bars against their limits, and your regret list. Nothing loads — it's already on your phone. Share as plain text or export to CSV. A REMINDER THAT ISN'T A NAG One notification a day, at a time you pick, carrying today's actual number instead of a generic "don't forget." Survives reboots, app updates, and clock changes. ACTUALLY PRIVATE, NOT JUST PROMISED Second Guess has no INTERNET permission in its manifest. Not a policy — a technical fact: there's no way for it to send your data anywhere, ever. No accounts, no ads, no analytics, no crash reporting, no third-party SDKs. YOUR BACKUP, YOUR CLOUD, YOUR TERMS Pick a folder once, through Android's own file picker, and it works with whatever you already have — Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, an SD card, anything with a document provider. No sign-in, no API key. Auto-backup writes a fresh snapshot daily. Manual backups can be encrypted with AES-256 and a passphrase only you know — lose it and the backup's gone, on purpose. BUILT FOR ANY CURRENCY, AND TO BE SMALL Pick any symbol or code, and universal or Indian-style digit grouping — whichever matches how you think about money. No bloated frameworks, no unnecessary permissions, starts instantly, stays around 3MB. Every feature here earns its place by making you pause a little longer before spending money you'd otherwise wish you'd kept. That's the whole app, and that's the point.

What's new

Meet Second Guess — a budget tracker that argues with you before you spend, not after. See exactly what's safe to spend today. Every want gets a reason and a real pushback: what it costs you tomorrow, what it does to your category limit, whether you called it a "need" when it's really a luxury. No accounts, no ads, no internet permission — everything stays on your phone, with optional backup to your own cloud folder.
