Purim is a jubilant Jewish holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from a genocidal plot in ancient Persia, as recounted in the biblical Book of Esther. Through the courage of Queen Esther, who hid her Jewish identity until the critical moment, and her cousin Mordecai, the decree was overturned, and the Jews were granted the right to defend themselves. Today, the holiday is celebrated with a sense of "upside-down" revelry and joy, characterized by reading of the Megillah, wearing colorful costumes, and eating triangular pastries known as Haman’s ears.
