Full description
The DEAF Employability Accelerator (DEA) stems from the need to guide Deaf individuals from learner to employable candidate. The national initiative accelerates the transition process and ensures that learners are equipped for meaningful employment. Where learners historically relied on lengthy learning pathways alone, they can now make use of a growing portfolio of short, accredited learning programmes with a focus on the relevant skills needed for employment. The courses provided in the DEA allow learners to quickly build their skills, grow in confidence and demonstrate their capabilities to potential employers. There are many positive aspects of the DEA: • The app is available nationally. • Learning programmes are delivered mainly through the app, supported by hybrid learning models where appropriate. Learners have access to facilitators for reinforcement concepts. • The DEA creates a flexible and accessible learning environment that combines digital learning, facilitated sessions, practical activities and workplace-oriented development. • Learning materials on the app are created specifically for Deaf learners. The use of South African Sign Language (SASL) videos, images and text allow Deaf learners to learn from and interact with the content in a beneficial way. How the DEA Works The goal of the DEA is to act as an employability acceleration pathway. How does it work? 1. Access Deaf individuals access the platform nationally. They participate in learning opportunities based on their skill needs, interests, and career goals. 2. Skills Development Learners complete short, skills-based programmes that are accredited where applicable. They are aligned with workplace requirements. New programmes are added to the DEA portfolio as learner and industry needs and employment opportunities evolve. 3. Accessibility All materials are designed for Deaf learners. The use of SASL videos, images and clearly written text are used with Deaf Education methodology to provide digital content that is accessible, enjoyable and optimal for the learner. 4. Employability Acceleration The objective of the DEA is more than simply providing a certificate. All learning programmes on the platform aim to improve the individual's ability to enter, participate and succeed in the workplace by developing relevant knowledge, practical competencies, confidence and workplace readiness. 5. Demonstrating Readiness Learners' participation, progress, skills development and achievements are captured through the DEA ecosystem, creating a clearer picture of an individual's capabilities and employability journey. 6. Connection to Opportunity The purpose of the DEA is to create a stronger bridge between Deaf talent and economic opportunity. As individuals develop relevant skills, the DEA supports pathways to employment, work experience, further development and other economic opportunities. The DEA Vision The DEA is built on the belief that Deaf individuals should not have to wait years to acquire the skills needed to participate meaningfully in the economy. Perpetuating the values of eDEAF and DEAFinition that state that Deaf candidates are capable learners and candidates, this platform provides access to a more streamlined method of creating work-ready individuals. By providing accessible, short-form, accredited learning opportunities, the DEA creates a continuous skills-development pipeline that can respond quickly to changing employer requirements and emerging sectors. The DEA is not a single course or qualification. It is a national platform and pathway for continuous employability development, with the capability to expand its programme offering as new skills, industries and employment opportunities emerge. The intention is simple: provide Deaf individuals with accessible, relevant and recognised skills that accelerate their journey from potential to employability.
