chinalli - Learn Chinese

Learn. Reinforce. Then move on. You study Chinese regularly, but too little really sticks? You know lots of words, but whole sentences still refuse to come? And do hearts, leagues, noise and bright colours distract you more than they help? chinalli is a calm, focused learning app for Mandarin. It grew out of personal learning experience and follows the principle of spaced repetition. Learn words. Take sentences with you. You may know the feeling: you recognize individual words, but when you want to speak, the sentence suddenly disappears. That is why every card in chinalli shows both: the word and an example sentence in which it appears, with pinyin, translation and speech output. You decide what you want to learn or test yourself on: just the word, or the whole sentence as well. This way, you learn words together with patterns and phrases you can reuse later. Practice what you really mix up 买 or 卖 – which one was “to buy” again? If you keep mixing up two words, chinalli can turn them into a short confusion drill: distinguish the meanings, distinguish the characters, hear the tone and finally choose the correct word yourself. The confusion drill runs separately from normal vocabulary learning and does not change your vocabulary learning progress. Hear tones, don’t just read them Three types of practice help you train Chinese tones in a focused way: identify the tone of a syllable, distinguish minimal pairs and recognize words by ear. A separate section also explains the four tones with contours, examples and speech output. See characters in building blocks You can look up and practise 41 character components – with memory aids and examples from the chinalli deck. This makes recurring parts of Chinese characters visible and lets you practise them directly.
