Full description
BrothRecipeBox is a recipe book for the phone propped against the kettle. Write down what you actually cook, scale it to however many are eating, and let the app run the timers. SCALED, NOT GUESSED Tap a number and every quantity moves with it. A recipe written for two becomes a recipe for six without any mental arithmetic over a hot pan. Halves come out as halves. The app writes ½, ⅓ and ¾ the way a recipe does, rather than leaving you to work out what 0.333 of a tablespoon is. Lines with no number on them — salt to taste, a pinch of this — are left exactly as written, because three times "to taste" is still "to taste". Quantities also tidy themselves as they grow. Three teaspoons become a tablespoon, twelve hundred millilitres become 1.2 litres, and past four tablespoons a spoon measure turns into a volume, because at that point nobody is counting spoons. METRIC OR CUPS, YOUR CHOICE Switch the whole book between metric and US measures in one tap and watch two live samples change before you go back to a recipe. Whatever you typed is stored exactly as typed — the conversion happens on the way to the screen, so switching back and forth never loses a gram. TIMERS ON THE STEP THEY BELONG TO A step that says twelve minutes carries a twelve minute timer. Start it from the step itself and a ring counts it down at the top of the screen. When it runs out the phone buzzes three times, because one buzz across a kitchen is easy to miss. COOK MODE Cooking opens on an ingredient check so everything is out on the counter before the pan goes on, then moves to the method one step at a time. Tap a step to tick it off and the next one lights up. Finish and it goes into the log. TWELVE STAPLES TO START FROM Weeknight tomato pasta, proper porridge, roast chicken and its gravy, red lentil soup, yoghurt flatbreads, shakshuka, yesterday's rice fried, banana bread, a Sunday ragù, a Greek-ish salad, stock from the carcass, and a salmon traybake. Take any of them and it becomes your own copy to change however you like. FIND THINGS AGAIN Search titles, tags and ingredient names at once — looking for "lemon" finds the recipe that only mentions it halfway down the list. Tag recipes however suits you and filter by tapping a chip. Star the ones you come back to. Sort by recently cooked, recently added, title or speed. SEE WHAT YOU ACTUALLY COOK The book opens on the last seven days and your current run. The charts screen draws three weeks of cooking, breaks the book down by tag, and keeps a few quiet records — longest run, busiest day, what you make most, and what you have never got round to making at all. TEN BADGES Your first page, fifty dinners, a month at the stove, four nights running, eight tags in use. Nothing to buy and nothing to unlock. EVERYTHING STAYS HERE No analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting, no networking code. The Android build requests no permissions at all — not even internet access. No account and no sync, which also means no copy anywhere else: uninstall it and the book goes too.
