BriSense: Bridge Translator

"I feel nauseous." That's what the chat app's built-in translator gave me. My girlfriend — now my wife — had sent something in Vietnamese right after a date, and I spent the next few minutes worried she'd eaten something bad. The translation was accurate. I still misunderstood her. She was carsick, on her way home. That gap — between what a sentence says and what a person means — is the whole problem. Translators are getting very good at accuracy. They are not getting better at being understood. That night I built a workaround with iPhone Shortcuts: run her Vietnamese through English first, then into Korean. The intent held. English, it turns out, is unusually good at carrying meaning between two languages that don't share one.
