BecomeBulgarian is built for the person who has already moved, or is about to. It starts with the phone call before you land, then the airport, then the cafe, then the landlord, the bank and the doctor. 2,942 sentences across 32 real situations, every one of them voiced by a native speaker in Sofia, in the order you actually need them. YOUR OWN SENTENCES, IN A NATIVE VOICE This is the part a phrasebook cannot do. Say or type the thing you actually need — "Can I get the bill, please?", "The boiler is leaking again", "My daughter starts school in September" — and it comes back as natural Bulgarian, not a dictionary translation, spoken in the same native voice as the rest of the app. It is yours from then on: replay it, group it, practise it, take it to the shop. LISTEN AT NIGHT Osmosis is a dark, quiet screen that loops the sentences you already know while you fall asleep, then fades itself out and stops. Five to sixty minutes, you set it. It keeps playing with the screen off and from the notification shade. No notification wakes you, and nothing is waiting for you in the morning. BUILT FOR ADHD AND DYSLEXIA, BECAUSE IT HAD TO BE OpenDyslexic, high contrast, bigger text and calm motion are toggles you can reach in two taps, not a buried accessibility menu. Latin transliteration sits under the Cyrillic until you stop needing it. Audio is the primary channel and reading is optional. And there are no streaks, no badges, no confetti and no leaderboards. Nothing in this app punishes you for a bad week. If you disappear for a month, it is exactly where you left it. WORKS OFFLINE Anything you have already loaded plays without a connection, including on a plane. Sentences you capture offline sync when you are back. WHAT IT COSTS Every curated phrase and every clip is free, forever. Thirty sentences of your own a month are free too. Nothing in this version asks you to pay. If a paid plan comes later, for unlimited sentences of your own, it will be offered inside the app and everything above stays free. HONEST ABOUT WHAT IS AND IS NOT BUILT This is version 0.1, and we would rather tell you than let you find out. Working today: all 32 situations with native audio, capturing your own sentences by typing or speaking in English, translation and audio for them, recording yourself to compare with the native voice, asking a Bulgarian teacher on our team to check a sentence, listen-and-repeat, stories and tongue twisters as they are published, the Osmosis night loops with the fade-out timer, and offline playback. Still being built: pronunciation scoring, speaking your attempt in Bulgarian, spaced-repetition drills tuned to your own history, the weekly review, a second native voice, and a way for the best teacher-checked sentences to flow back into the shared curriculum for everyone. PERMISSIONS, AND WHY Microphone and speech recognition: only so you can capture a sentence by speaking instead of typing. Asked when you first tap the microphone, and typing works without it. Notifications: only if you set a daily reminder or switch on the Osmosis morning wake-up. We ask for nothing at launch. Made by someone who moved to Sofia and needed exactly this.
