Every case hides a real word behind a numeric checksum — trace the letters, watch the running total build tile by tile, and verify both the password AND the key before the case closes. Each rank introduces exactly one new twist to the checksum — a shifted alphabet, an alternating sign, a per-row shift, a multiply modifier — so the difficulty always climbs one idea at a time, never all at once, like a true brain teaser should. Evidence text gives you an honest, riddle-style lead toward the answer, but a planted rival word means you can't just guess — you have to actually trace the grid to be sure.
