Full description
You have heard the term "autonomic nervous system." But could you explain what it actually refers to inside your body? Your heart keeps beating without being told. Step into a dark room and your pupils widen on their own. Run, and your breathing quickens. Eat, and your gut starts working. You never decided any of it. The part of you that handles all of that on its own is the autonomic nervous system. This app follows what it really is, in order, from the beginning. Not as medicine, but as biology and physiology. ■ Read it, answer it, until it clicks A short reading and a quiz about that reading come as a pair. What you think you understood, you check on the spot. Neither one is the main event: together they get you to "now I see." The readings are written without technical jargon. Only five comparisons are used: a control room, an accelerator and a brake, a phone call and a letter, a key and a keyhole, and a fire alarm. Diagrams are included, so the shape of an idea comes across even if reading is not your thing. Right after you read, a quiz asks only about what you just read. Getting it wrong does not block you. Nothing is gated behind a score. ■ The further you read, the more the pieces connect The order itself is doing the work. That the body runs on autopilot. That nerves are not one long wire, but a relay that hands over chemicals. That there is an accelerator side and a brake side. That the same chemical causes different reactions depending on the "keyhole" that receives it. That there are two lines: fast nerves, and hormones that arrive slowly. What you read earlier becomes the ground for what comes next. By the end, you will know why the autonomic nervous system got that name. ■ Where the science is unsettled, we say so Where the body's alarm system comes up, so does the fact that the alarm can ring harder than the situation calls for. We do not overstate it. What research has established and what remains unknown are kept separate on the page. Sources are listed at the end of each reading and each explanation. Textbooks and peer-reviewed papers are cited in a form you can follow, so you can check anything yourself. ■ It comes back when you have forgotten it Questions you have answered return for review. Ones you got wrong, or were unsure about, come back first, so your time goes where it is needed. Finish the main material and a deeper set opens up: the history of the discoveries, and the reasons behind things your body does. ■ Who it is for - Anyone who knows the term but cannot explain what it means - Anyone who wants the workings of the body with the evidence attached - Anyone who enjoys biology and the human body - Anyone who wants to know the accurate version before talking about it with family or friends ■ About using the app - Each round is short. You can make progress a little at a time. - Works without an internet connection. - Progress and scores stay on this device only. - Your title changes as you go, starting from Trainee. - Available in Japanese, English, Korean, Chinese, German and other languages. ■ Please note This is a study app covering topics in biology and physiology. It is not intended to give medical or health advice, or to help judge your condition. If anything about your health concerns you, please consult a qualified professional. By the time you finish, "autonomic nervous system" will stop being just a phrase, and start being a description of what is actually happening inside you.
