Full description
Reception rings up to ask which rooms can be let, and the honest answer is usually a walk up the stairs. The printed list went out of date at nine o'clock, the housekeeper is somewhere on the second floor, and nobody can say whether 204 has been checked yet. Room Reset is the board that answers it, kept by the people actually turning the rooms. The building is the screen. Each floor is a corridor and each room is a door standing along it, so you read the morning the way you would read the actual corridor. A shut door is a room with nothing to do. A door standing open with the light behind it is one that has been stripped or is being cleaned right now, with the initial of whoever is on it. A door shut with a key tag hanging on the handle is checked and ready to let, and a hatched door is out of service. Across the top sits the number reception keeps asking for — how many rooms are ready this minute — and tapping it hides everything else so only the ready doors are left. A room moves the way a room really moves, and never any other way. Occupied becomes due out, due out is stripped, stripped is cleaned by somebody, cleaned goes to be inspected, and only a room that passes inspection gets its key tag. A room that fails goes straight back to stripped with the reason recorded against it, and it counts as a re-clean for the day. There is no way to skip a step and no way to quietly mark a room ready because the board was in the way, which is precisely what makes it worth reading. The morning's work is shared out by weight rather than by floor, because one floor can be eight departures while the next is two refreshes. Set what a departure turn and a stayover refresh are worth to your house, and the round comes out as level as the work allows — and when it cannot be levelled, the board says by how much rather than pretending. Anything somebody has already started stays with them, out-of-service rooms are left off entirely, and moving one room to another cleaner is two taps. Because every change is stamped as it happens, the day adds up by itself. Day review shows the average time a room took from the moment it was due out to the moment it passed inspection, how that compares with the last seven days, how many rooms each cleaner turned, and anything that had to be done twice with the reason it was sent back. None of that is typed in by anybody; it is simply what the timestamps already knew. And because housekeeping mornings do not begin at midnight, the day rolls over at an hour you choose. Room Reset is deliberately not a booking system. It holds no guest name, no contact detail and no reservation, and it has nothing to do with money — no rates, no charges, no takings anywhere in it. The only people it names are the cleaners on shift, by first name, so the round can be shared out. Everything stays on the device, there is no sign-in, and nothing is sent anywhere. It works in a basement laundry with no signal exactly as it works at the front desk.
