Full description
Halal & Healthy is the halal food scanner for everyday shopping: scan any barcode and instantly see what is inside your food, with detailed information about ingredients and the origins of food additives (E-numbers), powered by Open Food Facts and its 2M+ products. Trusted since 2022, with more than 10,000 installs. WHAT THE APP DOES - Dietary Profile: tell the app what matters to you across 19 attributes — vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, allergen-free (milk, eggs, nuts, peanuts, soy and more), palm-oil-free, low-additive — at four importance levels. Every product you scan gets a personalized 0-100% match score. - Alternatives: for any suspicious or low-scoring product, get a one-tap grid of permissible, nutrition-ranked substitutes in the same category, ranked by Nutri-Score and NOVA. - Nutrition at a glance: Nutri-Score, NOVA and Eco-Score badges on every product, with Open Food Facts knowledge panels covering health, environment and additives. WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT - A halal checker in your pocket: the scanner gives a fast verdict on every barcode — Halal, Doubtful, Haram or Unknown. - Suspicious-ingredient and additive detection, with awareness of Muslim-majority countries. - Scan history, favorites and a personal blocklist. - Add or update missing products — your contributions go to Open Food Facts and improve it for everyone. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is E471 halal? E471 (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids) is a common emulsifier whose raw material can be either plant oil or animal fat. When the source is vegetable it is generally considered permissible; when it comes from pork fat it is not. The label rarely says which, so point the scanner at the barcode: the app shows what is known about the additive's origin and rates the product accordingly. Which E-numbers come from pork? None is always pork-based, but several are frequently animal-derived: E428 (gelatin), E471 and E472 (emulsifiers), E542 (bone phosphate) and E631 (disodium inosinate). Gelatin in gummy sweets, marshmallows and some yogurts is the most common pork-derived ingredient, and E120 (carmine) is insect-derived. The scanner flags these additives on every barcode and explains each origin in plain language. How do I check whether a product is halal certified? Certification marks are printed on packaging but rarely recorded in barcode databases, so start with the label. The app covers what the label does not say: it reads the full ingredient list from Open Food Facts, detects suspicious ingredients and doubtful additives, and tells you whether the product comes from a Muslim-majority country — so you can judge how much weight to give a missing certificate. What does Mushbooh (doubtful) mean? Mushbooh is the category between permitted and forbidden: an ingredient could be plant-based or animal-based, and the available data does not say which. Flavorings processed with alcohol and emulsifiers of unknown origin are typical examples. Rather than guessing, the app marks such a product as Doubtful — scan its barcode and the scanner also suggests better-rated alternatives from the same category. Whether a product is made in a non-Muslim country without a halal certificate or contains doubtful additives or suspicious ingredients, the scanner helps you make an informed choice. Remember, we're not here to issue fatwas about food products — we provide information and suggestions. The final decision is always yours. We don't support any particular organization, manufacturer or ideology. How we classify a product (indicative, based on the available data): Halal (حلال): the data shows only vegetarian origins. Doubtful (مشبوه): the origin is uncertain — it could be vegetarian, animal or alcohol-based. Haram (حرام): the data shows an animal or alcohol-based origin. Unknown: no origin data is available. Use Halal & Healthy: Food Scanner to take better control of your diet — one barcode at a time.
