عد الكتاب الداء والدواء من أفضل الكتب التي عنيت بتهذيب النفوس ومعالجة أمراضها وتقوية صلتها بالله -تعالى، ألّفه الإمام محمد بن أبي بكر بن أيوب الدمشقي، ولد عام 691هـ، وتوفي عام 751هــ وكان عالماً إذ طبقت شهرته الآفاق، وأَمّ في المدرسة الجوزية في دمشق التي كان والده قيماً عليها، أي مديراً لها، ومن هنا جاءت شهرته بابن قيم الجوزية، وكان عالماً بأحوال النفس الإنسانية وتهذيبها، وله عدة مؤلفات في هذا العلم، اسم الكتاب اشتهر الكتاب باسم الجواب الكافي لمن سأل عن الدواء الشافي، وللكتاب اسم آخر هو الداء والدواء، وسبب تأليف الكتاب أصل الكتاب سؤال وجّهه أحد المستفتين للمؤلف، وقد ذكره المؤلف في بداية الكتاب، ثم أجاب عنه بتفصيل مفيد استغرق الكتاب كله وهذا نص السؤال: ما تقول السادة العلماء، أئمة الدين - رضي الله عنهم أجمعين - في رجل ابتلي ببلية وعلم أنها إن استمرت به أفسدت عليه دنياه وآخرته، وقد اجتهد في دفعها عن نفسه بكل طريق، فما تزداد إلا توقدا وشدة، فما الحيلة في دفعها؟ وما الطريق إلى كشفها؟ فرحم الله من أعان مبتلى، والله في عون العبد ما كان العبد في عون أخيه، أفتونا مأجورين.
