Page one Drop a disc into any lane of the upright grid and it falls to the lowest empty cell. Line up four of your own across, up or on a slant before your rival does; a full board with no line is a draw. The finishing line is drawn in ink over an ochre marker, and the last move is circled so you never lose track. Page two The Ladder is a campaign of 20 rivals in four chapters of five: First Pages, Ink Blots, Wide Margins and The Master's Desk. Grids grow from 6×5 to 9×7, ink blots fill some cells in advance, and on certain stages the rival opens. The thinking runs from Novice through Club and Expert to Master, which reads eight moves ahead. Finish first for one star, or do it in fewer of your own discs for two or three, with 60 in all and no undo. Page three Pass & Play sets two pens on one device, with undo for friendly games, a running tally of the desk and the last 20 games listed with the shortest marked. Studies offers 12 puzzles of the finish-in-two, three or four kind, taken from real positions, where the defender always picks the most stubborn reply. Page four The History Quiz asks ten questions per round from 25 checked facts on abstract board games, from ancient Ur and Senet to computer chess, with a note after each answer. Fifteen badges are sealed in wax as you go, and the ledger keeps your share of ladder games finished first, stars, studies and discs stamped. Haptics and the drifting lamp dust can be switched off, and the notebook stays offline, with no sound, no ads and no account.
