Tropicals

Tropicals is the official Android app for tropicals.cn, an open species database. Every record is filed under its scientific name, covering plants, ornamental aquatics and exotic animals, and is open to anyone. Browse species • Search by name or scientific name, or browse Plants, Aquatics and Animals by group: aroids, orchids, succulents, tetras, guppies, geckos, snakes and more, 39 groups in all. • The Species tab lays out each group as a photo catalog. Tap a group to see all of its species. • 420,000+ species on file. Species details • Taxonomy (order, family and genus), the scientific name with its author, and native range. • Care at a glance: difficulty, temperature, humidity and light, where available. • CITES status. • Sources and evidence: the basis for each name, links to external databases, and image credits and licenses. • A feed at the bottom of every species page that keeps going: look-alikes and similar species first, then the same genus, the same family and the whole category. Snap, identify, record Tap the + in the middle of the bottom bar to open the camera, or pick up to 30 photos from your library. Each photo becomes its own record. Before you save, the species is identified automatically (an AI suggestion you can confirm or change), and the time and place are read from the photo. Identification is performed by a third-party AI service provider. Your page Your records and favorites live on your Me page. Favorites sync to your account, so they are still there when you sign in on another device. Browsing history stays on your device only. Records and favorites require an account. Industry events Trade shows, markets, nature tours and conferences for horticulture, ornamental aquatics and reptiles worldwide. Filter by region and type, search, look back at past events, add an event to your calendar or open the venue in your maps app. English and Chinese The interface is available in English and Chinese. In the English interface, species appear under their English or scientific names. Long-form encyclopedia text is currently available in the Chinese interface only. Open data The same records are published as open datasets, an open-source model and a public API under CC-BY 4.0, archived on Zenodo with citable DOIs. The open release covers text and structured data only; images are not included. That data may be used commercially, with no permission needed. Images stay under their own original licenses. No ads. No analytics or tracking SDKs.
