A Organização Nacional de Cegos do Brasil, é a única instituição da sociedade civil representante de forma direta de 86 entidades de e para cegos legalmente constituída e de 7 milhões de brasileiros com deficiência visual (IBGE 2010). Com representação nas cinco regiões geográficas do País, a ONCB tem como um de seus principais objetivos institucionais, a defesa dos direitos das pessoas com deficiência visual – cegas ou com baixa visão. Para tanto, atua em âmbito nacional e internacional e propõe e participa de discussões de temas relevantes para o segmento nas mais distintas áreas. Para viabilizar a consecução de seus objetivos, a ONCB tem assento no Conselho Nacional dos Direitos da Pessoa Com Deficiência (CONADE); Conselho Nacional de Saúde (CNS); Conselho Nacional de Juventude (CONJUVE); Conselho Diretivo do Plano Nacional do Livro e Leitura (PNLL) e Comissão Brasileira do Braille (CBB), além de integrar, em nível nacional, o Comitê Representativo das Entidades de Pessoas com Deficiência (CRPD), e, em nível internacional, a União Latino-americana de Cegos (ULAC) e a União Mundial de Cegos (UMC).
