Full description
No ads. Not a banner, not an interstitial, not a "watch a video to continue" — none, anywhere, ever. Nothing to buy, nothing to subscribe to, no account, and no tracking of any kind. Breadbin is a Commodore 64 emulator written from the hardware up: the 6510 processor, the VIC-II video chip, the SID sound chip, both CIAs, and the memory banking that ties them together. The processor passes Klaus Dormann's functional test suite, which is the standard by which 6502 emulators are judged. IT RUNS WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE • Disk images — .d64 • Tapes — .t64 and .tap, read pulse by pulse • Cartridges — .crt, with the common bank-switching mappers • Programs — .prg and .p00 • Zip archives of any of the above, unpacked for you FIND SOMETHING TO PLAY A search box looks through the Internet Archive's Commodore 64 collection and puts what you pick straight into your library. No browser, no file manager, no copying files around. IT WORKS THE MOMENT YOU INSTALL IT Breadbin ships with the MEGA65 project's Open ROMs, which are free software, so there is nothing to find before it will start. Commodore's own ROMs are more compatible — a great deal of software from the period jumps into the middle of the KERNAL rather than calling it — and one button fetches them if you want them. If a game stops on the free ROMs, the app tells you which address it jumped to and what to do about it, rather than leaving you with a frozen screen. PLAYING IT • A touch joystick and fire button, over the picture, with adjustable size and transparency, and a second fire anywhere your other thumb lands. • The full C64 keyboard when a game wants one, without taking the joystick away. • Either joystick port, since games disagree about which one they read. • Fast-forward, and a plain LOAD is answered directly rather than clocked down an emulated serial line, so a game starts in seconds rather than a minute. • Disks are writable: a game that saves has somewhere to save to. • PAL or NTSC. ABOUT THE INTERNET PERMISSION Breadbin asks for it, and it is worth saying exactly what for. Two things use it, both started by you pressing a button: fetching ROM files, and searching the Internet Archive and downloading a game. Nothing else in the app opens a connection — no analytics, no update check, no ads, nothing phoning home, and nothing at all while a game is running. ABOUT ROMS AND GAMES The app contains no Commodore ROMs and no games. The ROMs it ships are the Open ROMs, under the LGPL. Anything else you add — Commodore's firmware, or software you download — is yours to obtain and yours to be entitled to. The app is a machine; what you run on it is your business and your responsibility. OPEN SOURCE Breadbin is open source. The emulation is covered by tests, including the processor conformance suite, and the whole thing can be built from a clone.
