Full description
Badhra is a learning platform for Modern Standard Arabic. It also has a dictionary, and you can look a word up from anywhere inside it. A GARDEN, NOT A LIST OF COURSES What you learn is planted in one place, and the pieces feed each other. Save a word while reading, and it comes back in your review deck, turns up in the sentences you can already read, and stands beside the next word from the same root. Nothing sits in its own corner. WHAT IS IN IT A guided course that begins at the alphabet, so you can start from nothing. If you already read Arabic, you skip it and go straight to the words. A course you build yourself: name a topic and a level. A reading library across five levels, with audio that highlights each word as it is read. Dialogues to read, to take a role in, and to say out loud. A chat that answers in Arabic at your level and afterwards tells you what went wrong, anchored to what you actually wrote. The vine: sentences pulled from the whole library that you can already read, because every word in them is one you know. Next to them the ones with exactly one new word, which is where reading starts to carry you. Roots. Most Arabic words grow from a three-letter root, and the family is visible in the spelling. Badhra shows it every time and says so when a new word shares a root with one you already have. Grammar lessons, Arabic word patterns explained with examples, and colouring that marks case endings in a text only where they are certain. TAP ANY WORD, ANYWHERE In a lesson, a reading text, a dialogue, a phrase, a chat reply. Tap it and you get the meaning, the root, the pattern it is built on, the pronunciation, example sentences, the other words from that root, and the full conjugation for verbs. Everything is written with full vowel marks, so you always know how it is read. REVIEW THAT ASKS IN EVERY WAY What you save comes back on the day you are about to forget it, and it is not the same question every time. Recognise it, produce it from English, hear it, fill it into a gap, meet it inside a sentence, conjugate it, put a scrambled sentence back in order, build it letter by letter, follow its root family, or say it out loud and have your pronunciation checked. Whichever direction you are weak in, there is a mode that goes that way. HOW IT TEACHES Testing yourself beats re-reading. In the classic experiment (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006) learners who tested themselves once remembered markedly more a week later than learners who re-read the same material several times, while feeling less confident about it. Feeling of learning and learning are not the same measurement, and Badhra is built on the second one. Words come back spread across days rather than drilled in one sitting, because memories built over time last longer. You read sentences you can almost read, not sentences three levels above you. There are no streak animations designed to keep you opening the app. The day has an end, and Badhra tells you when you have reached it. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO It will not make you fluent, and it does not pretend that any app can. Arabic takes longer than the promises you have read elsewhere, and its middle is uncomfortable: far enough in that beginner material feels easy, far enough from the end that real texts still push back. Badhra says so on its own pages instead of hiding it behind a progress bar. Word lookups are produced by a model and then checked against curated sources: a morphological database, a curated particle table, and deterministic conjugation. Where those sources disagree, Badhra shows nothing rather than guessing, because a wrong root is worse than a missing one. There is a report button on every word, and reports are read. PRIVACY No ads, no trackers, nothing sold. Looking a word up needs no account. You can export everything you have saved, and you can delete your account from inside the app.
