Full description
Calling is an Android application that lets you simulate realistic phone-call experiences without actually placing a phone call. It was created as a simple, lightweight tool for situations where you want to reproduce the experience of receiving or making a call without involving another person, phone number, or calling service. The app can be useful in a variety of situations. It can provide a convenient way to simulate an incoming call, demonstrate a calling interface, test Android functionality, or simply create a realistic call experience when needed. The original idea behind Calling was also inspired by people who may occasionally want a simulated call as an easy way to step away from an uncomfortable or unwanted social situation. Calling is built as a multi-module Android project, with dedicated components for mobile devices and Wear OS. This structure allows the project to support both smartphones and compatible smartwatches while keeping platform-specific functionality organized. The mobile application provides the primary calling experience, while the Wear OS module provides a foundation for bringing the experience to wearable devices. This opens the possibility of interacting with simulated calls directly from a smartwatch. The project is also designed with development and testing in mind. It includes separate testing source sets and documentation covering emulator testing, privacy, and Google Play internal testing. This makes Calling useful not only as an end-user application but also as a practical Android development project. Because the calls are simulated rather than real communications, the application can provide a controlled environment for demonstrations and experimentation. Developers can test call-related interfaces and interactions without needing a second device or a real phone number. Potential use cases include: • Simulating incoming calls in social situations • Demonstrating a phone-call interface • Testing Android call-related user experiences • Prototyping calling interfaces and interactions • Testing applications on Android emulators • Experimenting with mobile and Wear OS integration • Demonstrating software without exposing real phone numbers The project can also be extended with additional customization in the future, such as custom caller names, profile pictures, phone numbers, ringtones, vibration patterns, scheduled calls, multiple caller profiles, and different incoming or outgoing call scenarios. Calling is open source and provides a practical example of Android application development involving user interfaces, application architecture, testing, device integration, and wearable support. At its core, Calling focuses on one simple idea: giving users a convenient and controlled way to simulate a phone call whenever they need one—without actually calling anyone.
