MobilityPulse Live

MobilityPulse is a mobility-research app from United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), Al Ain. It is a research instrument, not a commercial product. Its purpose is to build an accurate picture of how people actually travel across the United Arab Emirates — which journeys they make, by which modes, at which times — so that transport infrastructure, public-transport services and sustainability policy can be planned against real behaviour instead of estimates. HOW IT WORKS Travel surveys have always asked people to remember their trips and write them down. That method is expensive, hard to repeat, and systematically loses the short walks, the connecting rides and the errands people forget. MobilityPulse replaces the diary with your phone. The app runs quietly in the background. Using satellite positioning together with your phone's motion and activity sensors, it recognises when a journey starts, follows the route while you travel, and closes the trip once you have stopped. It then classifies how you travelled — walking, cycling, scooter, car, bus or metro — from the pattern of movement and speed. You never press start or stop. What you contribute is context: confirming or correcting the detected mode, and optionally adding the purpose of the trip, who travelled with you, what it cost, and which of your vehicles you used. Those few taps are what turn a GPS trace into research-grade data. WHY THE APP USES LOCATION IN THE BACKGROUND Trip detection only works if the app can see movement while you are not looking at your phone — that is the entire point of replacing a written travel diary. So the app asks for location access "all the time", and Android shows a permanent notification whenever tracking is running. Location is used for detecting and recording your trips, and for the research analysis. It is never used to profile you for advertising, and it is never sold. WHAT YOU GET BACK • Trip history — every journey with its route on a map, distance, duration and mode. • Carbon impact — the CO2 produced by each trip, and how much you avoid by walking, cycling or sharing instead of driving. • Analytics — how your distance, time, cost and mode split change week to week and month to month, exportable as a PDF report you keep. • Cost and time insight — how much of your week and your budget your travel actually consumes. YOUR CONTROL • Taking part is voluntary, and you can stop at any time. • Home-location masking: designate a home area and a radius, and trip detection pauses inside it.
